In a session
that would see conditions improve as the time counted down the BMW
WilliamsF1 drivers would finish the session in sixth and eleventh positions
with Mark leading Nick.
The second
Saturday session would see the weather clearing with then track slightly
wet. The outlook for qualifying was encouraging. Toyota's Jarno Trulli was
the first driver out joined by Red Bull's David Coulthard and McLaren's Juan
Pablo Montoya. Mark Webber would also take to the track early after his
difficult first session. Trulli would set the first time with a 1m:44.204.
He would be pass by
Coulthard who would set a time of 1m:41.294 to go fastest.
Mark Webber would move into second with a 1m:43.188. Coulthard would show
how slippery it still was as he got very crossed up going through Turn 11.
Sauber's Felipe Massa was faster with a 1m:41.194. Sauber team-mate Jacques
Villeneuve would move into fifth with a 1m:48.207. Coulthard would return to
the top with a 1m:38.610. Jenson Button would set a time of 1m:49.673 to be
in sixth, while Minardi's Christian Albers was one place behind. Klein was
in third and Alonso fourth.
Massa was now back in first with a 1:38.058. Albers would move ahead of
Button with a 1m:47.509. BAR's Takuma Sato was now fourth with a 1m:40.912,
while ex-WilliamsF1 driver Ralf Schumacher moved into fifth with a
1m:41.135. The track was now drying as more drivers were out. Massa would
improve with a
1m:37.408, while Alonso was close behind the Sauber with a 1m:37.508.
Montoya was now in third with a 1m:37.633.
Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella would set the quickest time with a 1m:35.881.
Team-mate Alonso was even quicker in both the first and second sectors, but
he would lose time in the third setting a time of 1m:36.050 to be in second.
Montoya would improve to be third again with a 1m:36.640, with twenty
minutes remaining. Mark Webber was down in thirteenth with a 1m:43.188. Nick
Heidfeld had yet to set a time.
Jordan's Karthikeyan would spin at turn nine travelling across the gravel,
after he lost control of his car. He was not able to continue and a small
fire would start at the rear of his car requiring the marshals to spray the
car with their fire extinguisher. His session was over. Nick would finally
set a time good enough for seventh with a 1m:38.747. Mark had dropped to
fifteenth, as blue sky started to
come out.
Raikkonen would move to the top of the times with a 1m:35.546. Neither
Ferrari driver had set a time. Mark was back out again as several of the
teams practiced pit stops. Michael Schumacher would finally come out.
Coulthard was in fifth with a 1m:37.180. Mark would shot up the times with a
1m:36.601 to be in fourth. Michael Schumacher quickly moved into second with
a 1m:35.667, while Raikkonen would go fastest with a 1m:35.546. Mass was in
third with a 1m:35.712.
With less than ten minutes remaining Ralf would go fastest with a 1m:34.924
as Takuma Sato was pushing hard and would move into second with a 1m:35.052.
Trulli would take his Toyota to the front with a 1m:34.588. But Jarno's time
would be beaten by Fisichella and the by Alonso with a rapid 1:29.345 to be
over three seconds faster.
With the circuit under a sever weather warning the action on the track
continued as Alonso would again go fastest with a 1m:28.900. Coulthard was
in third with a 1m:34.050. Villeneuve would leave his pit dragging a tyre
warmer along the pitlane. He would stop and have it removed prior to taking
to the track. Sato was now in fourth with a 1m:31.586.
With one minute remaining Fisichella would go fastest quickly beaten by
Montoya. Mark Webber had been pushed out of the top ten but would improve to
move into fifth. Raikkonen would go fastest with a 1:27.297, as Alonso would
take second with a 1m:27.409. So with the session ending Mark and Nick were
in sixth and eleventh respectively. With the session ended the weather would
get worse with the rain returning. |
