The second
Friday practice session for the 2005 Malaysian Grand Prix would see Nick
Heidfeld finish in fifteenth while team-mate Mark Webber would complete just
two laps without setting a time as a result of gear selection problems with
his FW27. After a promising first session things went somewhat badly for the
team.
The
opening Friday practice session would see Toyota's Ricardo Zonta fastest,
with McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa and Viantonio Liuzzi were second and third.
The second session would be run under very hot conditions, a temperature of
38 degrees, and it would be the Jordan's take to the track first with Narain
Karthikeyan setting a time of 1m:41.261. But Zonta would resume his place at
the top of the times with a 1m:36.915. With five minutes run the top eight
would be Zonta, Klien, de la Rosa, Karthikeyan, Doornbos, Montiero,
Albers and Friesacher.
For Kimi
Raikkonen his session would start badly when he was to spin putting his car
into the gravel. Red Bull's David Coulthard would move into fifth with a
1m:38.025. Montoya was in sixth with a 1m:38.719.
Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button would both take to the track with
Jenson setting a quick time to go fastest with a 1m:35.992. Sauber's Felipe
Massa had moved into second, some 0.7 seconds slower than the BAR. Toyota's
Jarno Trulli was in third with Zonta fourth. Michael Schumacher was now in
sixth with his first fast lap of the session been a 1m:37.372. Team-mate
Barrichello would also spin his car into the gravel. He would eventually get
his car back to the pits.
BAR's Takuma Sato was now in seventh with a 1m:37.451. Neither Renault had
taken to the track yet, with both drivers limiting their track time. With
nearly twenty minutes of the session run neither Mark Webber or Nick
Heidfeld had left their garages. Pedro de la Rosa was in eighth with a time
of 1m:37.467. Massa would set a quick time of 1m:35.608, to be 0.384 seconds
faster than Button.
Team-mate Jacques Jacques Villeneuve would come out and his first time would
be good enough for only twelfth with a time of 1m:39.406.
Coulthard
was again in third with a time of 1m:36.575. With just about half the
session remaining Renaults Giancarlo Fisichella would come out onto the
circuit. Nick Heidfeld would also join him. Fisichella's first timed lap
would see him seventh with a time of 1m:37.292. Nick's first timed lap would
see him move into eleventh with a time of 1m:38.247.
Vitantonio Liuzzi would join the list of drivers putting their cars in the
gravel, ending his session. Fernando Alonso's first lap was a 1m:42.076, but
he would quickly improve with a 1m:36.752 to now be in fourth. Mark Webber
was yet to set a time, even though he had been out onto the track. Takuma
Sato was now in eighth with a 1m:37.044. Pedro de la Rosa would take this
spot with a 1m:37.033. The top eight was Massa, Button, Zonta, Coulthard,
Alonso, Trulli, Klien and de la Rosa.
Barrichello was able to return to the practice after minor repairs to his
car. Montoya would move up to second position, with a 1m:35.620. Barrichello
was now in fourth while Fisichella moved into third with a 1m:35.841. Mark
was still in his garage with his mechanics working on his car. Ralf
Schumacher was now in third position, with a 1m:35.838. Alonso was in
seventh position, a 1m:36.103. The only drivers yet to post a time were
Raikkonen and Webber.
With around five minutes remaining Klein would spin his RB1 but was able to
get away. Both Sato and Michael Schumacher would spin while Klein would park
his car out on the circuit with what appeared to be a failed engine,
possibly explaining his earlier spin. Michael was down in fifteenth. Kimi
was out trying to set a time before the end of the session. Zonta was now in
third with a time of 1m:35.677, while Kimi was in fourth, leaving Massa at
the top of the times. |
