Saturday
qualifying would see Mark Webber been the sixth driver out due to his
retirement from the Malaysian Grand Prix. The first group was De la Rosa,
followed by Sato, Friesacher, Button, and Jacques Villeneuve. De la Rosa
would start his lap and his first sector time was a 28.9. The rest of his
lap was clan finishing with a time of 1m:30.725. Next came Sato. he would
lose time right across all the sectors finishing in second with a time of
1m:31.113, fourth tenths behind de la Rosa.
Minardi's
Patrick Friesacher would start his lap and he was down by two seconds after
sector two. He would finish with a time of 1m:34.848 to be in a very
temporary third. Now it was Jenson Button's turn. The BAR driver would be
0.2 down after sector one, followed by another tenth after sector two. He
would finish behind de la Rosa with a 1m:30.957 to be second.
Sauber's Jacques Villeneuve was out on his lap and after the first two
sectors was 0.6 behind the McLaren driver. After running wide in the final
corner he would finish with a time of 1m:32.318 to move in to fourth. But
his time was 1.5 seconds off de la Rosa's.
The next group would see Mark Webber out first. The rest of this group was
made up by Fisichella, Barrichello, Albers, and Monteiro. After setting the
fastest time in practice could Mark continue this in qualifying? Mark would
start his lap and would match de la Rosa's first sector time. His second
sector would see slightly behind. But he would finish his lap with a time of
1m:30.592 to go fastest by one tenth. Marks time was a full second off his
practice time.
Now it was the turn of Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella. After two sectors he
was 0.2 ahead of Marks time. He would push Mark into second with a time of
1m:30.445. The Renault's were again strong. Next was Barrichello. The
Ferrari driver had spent most of practice in his garage with gearbox
problems with his car. His lack of track time would show as he was 0.8 down
after sector one. He was 1.1 seconds down after sector two. He would finish
in sixth with a time of 1m:31.826.
Albers was next out and the Minardi driver was 2.6 seconds down after sector
two. He would finish with a time of 1m:34.005 to finish ahead of his
team-mate. Jordan's Tiago Monteiro was next and he would be nearly a second
slower after sector one. The erst of his lap was not much better, finishing
with a time of 1m:33.424. At least he was ahead of the two Minardi's.
The
next group was Narain Karthikeyan, Massa, Raikkonen, Klien, and Michael
Schumacher. Karthikeyan would start his lap and after the opening two
sectors was 1.8 seconds off the pace. He would finish with a time of
1m:33.190 to move ahead of his team-mate. Massa was next and he would be
close to the quickest time after sector one but would lose 0.4 in the
second. He would finish in fourth with a time of 1m:30.933. This was 1.5
seconds ahead of Villeneuve.
Raikkonen was right on the pace in the opening two sectors but would lose
0.1 in the final one to finish in third with a time of 1m:30.594. Mark
Webber was still in second but would be lucky to finish in the top six.
Klein was next out and he was 0.2 down after sector two. He would finish in
an excellent fourth with a time of 1m:30.646.
The final runner was Michael Schumacher in the new F2005. Michael was close
to 0.2 ahead after sector one. He would extend this in the second. His final
sector would see him cross the line with a time of 1m:30.237 to go fastest
by 0.2 from Fisichella. The final five drivers were Coulthard, Ralf
Schumacher, Heidfeld, Trulli, Fernando Alonso.
Coulthard would start his lap and was 0.4 down after sector one. Would he be
able to match his team-mate Klein. He would lose more time in the second
sector, now been 0.7 down. At the end of his lap he would finish with a time
of 1m:31.211 to be in tenth. His final sector was disappointing for the Red
Bull driver.
Ralf Schumacher was next out and he would be nearly a second down after
sector two. He would lose a lot of time when he ran wide at Turn One. He
would finish with a time of 1m:30.952 to be in eighth, even though he set
the fastest final sector time. Now it was Nick's turn. Could he match Marks
time? He would set an identical first sector time to Mark. Sector two and he
was ahead of his team-mate. he would finish his lap with a time of 1m:30.390
to be in an excellent second.
There were just two drivers left to run, Trulli and Alonso. Trulli would
start his lap and was on equal terms to Michael's time after sector two. He
would complete his lap with a blistering time of 1m:29.993 to be easily
quickest. Now it was down to Alonso. The Spaniard was 0.2 ahead after sector
one. He would extend this in the second and would cross the line with a time
of 1m:29.848 to go fastest. |
