For the BMW
WilliamsF1 team the second Thursday practice session at Monaco saw both
drivers drop further down the times with Mark and Nick in twelfth and
sixteenth positions.
The
poor performance of the FW27 backed up Webber's comments when he said that
the FW27 car was still not fast enough. Webber said: "We are working on it.
It's no good dreaming - we need more grip, more power, more downforce."
With McLaren's
Juan Pablo Montoya fastest in the morning practice session and
Renault's Fernando Alonso closely behind in second the teams would take to
the
circuit for the afternoon Thursday practice session.
First out was Toyota's Ricardo Zonta, followed by a group of cars. The first
competitive time was set by McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen with a time of
1m:19.082, but this was around 1.9 seconds slower than Montoya's quick time
from this morning. But on his next lap Kimi would improve his time by 1.5
seconds, a 1m:17.720. Montoya would set a time of 1m:17.869 to be in second
just 0.149 seconds off his team-mate's time. The McLaren's were looking
strong.
The circuit would be flooded with cars, a change from previous practice
sessions at previous Grand Prix. Red Bull's Tonio Liuzzi would set the third
fastest time, a
1m:18.711. Renault's Giancarlo Fisichella would move into this spot with a
time of 1m:18.531. For the BMW WilliamsF1 team Mark Webber would put his car
in to the top ten with a 1m:19.117. With ten minutes of the session run
Michael Schumacher would move into second with a time of 1m:17.562.
But for Fernando Alonso he would move ahead of the Ferrari with a stunning
time of 1m:16.832 to go fastest. Sauber's Felipe Massa was in ninth with a
1m:18.511. Fisichella would make it a Renault 1-2 with a time of 1m:17.341,
to move into second. For Nick Heidfeld his practice was turning out to be a
difficult been way down in fifteenth position. With a time of 1m:16.640
Luizzi would go fastest, an impressive effort from the Monaco rookie. With twenty minutes run Barrichello and Freisacher would both spin at the
tunnel
chicane.
Barrichello was to locked up his tyres spinning his Ferrari, while
Freisacher would spin his Minardi trying to avoid the Ferrari. Montoya was
now in third with a 1m:17.060. Barrichello would move into seventh place but
was 1.023 seconds off Liuzzi's pace.
At the front Alonso would improve on his time setting a sub 1m:16 lap, a
time of 1m:15.835. In his attempt to set a quick time Michael Schumacher
would over shoot the chicane and had to go up the escape route. Kimi
Raikkonen was now in third with a time of 1m:16.558. Team-mate Wurz would
push Kimi down the order when he set a time of 1m:16.170 to be in second.
Massa was in sixth with a 1m:17.019. Coulthard was in seventh with a
1m:17.020.
For Minardi's Christijan Albers his practice would come to an end when he
was to take off his front wing when he took the Casino Square corner too
fast and crashed into the barrier. He would make his way back to his pit for
repairs.
So with nearly forty five minutes of the session run the order was
Alonso, Wurz, Fisichella, Raikkonen, Liuzzi, Massa, Coulthard, Montoya,
Michael. Schumacher and Villeneuve. No sign of either BMW WilliamsF1 driver.
Klien would repeat Albers feat by taking off his front wing off coming out
of Casino Square corner. Coulthard would move in third with a time of
1m:16.184. Wurz would improve his time, a 1m:15.912, to be just 0.077
seconds behind Alonso. Ralf Schumacher was in eighth. The Toyota team was
struggling in this session. With five minutes left in the session Montoya
was now in sixth, a 1m:16.905. He would improve on this with a time of
1:16.534 to now be in fifth.
But the session would end with Massa crashing heavily into the tyre barrier
at St. Devote. Had was to have a major lock up on the right front wheel,
losing control of his Sauber. He was not injured in the accident. The
session would come to an end. |
