The first
qualifying session for the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix would see The BMW
WilliamsF1 teams drivers finish in an encouraging third and sixth positions.
Mark was in third after having held onto the fastest time until only the
last two drivers came out. Nick was in sixth but had showed a improvement in
the pace of his FW27 after having struggled through the practice sessions.
The
first group of drivers consisted of Liuzzi, Friesacher, Albers, Michael
Schumacher, and Villeneuve. Luizzi would complete his lap with a time of
1m:16.817. Next was Friesacher and the Austrian was six tenths down after
sector one, finishing 1.7 seconds behind Liuzzi's time with a lap of
1m:18.574. Team-mate Albers was next.
Albers would finish with a time of 1m:19.229 to be a substantial margin
behind his team-mate. For Michael Schumacher his lap would see him only one
tenth ahead after the first sector. At sector two he was four tenths up and
he would finish his lap with a time of 1m:16.186 to take provisional pole.
For Villeneuve his lap would see him two tenths on Schumacher after the
first sector. He would take provisional pole with a 1m:15.921.
Jordan driver Narian Karthikeyan would start his qualifying lap and was a
massive 2.1 seconds down after sector two. His lap was a very slow
1m:19.474. Jordan team-mate Tiago Monteiro was the next driver and was a
tenth slower than Narian after the first sector. Monteiro would just beat
his team-mate with a lap of 1m:19.408.
Felipe
Massa was next. Could he match team-mate Villeneuve's time. After the first
sector he was just off Jacques time. After the second he was two tenths
slower. He would finish with a time of 1m:16.218 to move into third. BMW
WilliamsF1's Nick Heidfeld was next followed by Rubens Barrichello.
After struggling to match Mark's times through out practice qualifying would
see Nick would secure provisional pole with a time of 1m:15.128.
Barrichello's lap would see him lose time to finish in third with a time of
1m:16.142. Rubens would lose time at the chicane when he was to lock up but
it was not too costly as he did finish ahead of his team-mate Michael.
The next group was Coulthard, Montoya, Webber, Fisichella and Ralf
Schumacher. Coulthard would start his lap and was ahead after sector two but
would lose time in the third to finish in second with a time of 1m:15.329.
Montoya was next and the McLaren driver was slightly up on Nick's time after
sector one. After sector two he was two tenths up and would cross the line
with a time of 1m:14.858 to go fastest. Next was Mark Webber. Mark was the
fastest so far in sector one, maintains his lead after sector two, and
finishes his lap with a time of 1m:14.584. This was a great lap from the BMW
WilliamsF1 driver.
For
the Giancarlo Fisichella, fastest in practice, his lap would see him level
with Mark after sector one, a tenth up after sector two, but he would lose
time in the final corner to move into second with a time of 1m:14.783 to be
0.199 behind Webber.
Toyota's Ralf Schumacher was next out and his qualifying lap would see him
close to Mark after sector one but he would get it wrong at Tabac and crash
heavily into the barriers ripping the front wheel off his Toyota. Ralf would
get out of his car ok but the session was red flagged as the marshals
removed his damaged car. Ralf clipped the inside retaining wall and then
slammed the TF105 into the outside. Ralf was to suffer a time penalty after
qualifying due to running with an incorrect tyre so he may have been pushing
hard. Ralf would show his frustration by throwing his steering wheel down
the track in a weekend he would probably prefer to forget..
The
last three drivers to qualifying were Trulli, Alonso and Raikkonen. Trulli
will
have the disadvantage of been the first driver out after his team-mates
accident, and having to contend with any changes to the track, including
oil, at the point Ralf has his accident. At this point in the session the
top ten was Webber, Fisichella, Montoya, Heidfeld, Coulthard, Villeneuve,
Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Massa, Liuzzi.
There were still delays as the marshals cleared the track with a special
vacuum
cleaner truck. The session would restart and Jarno would start his lap and
was a tenth down after sector one, four tenths down after sector two, and
would finish with a time of 1m:15.189 to move into fifth six tenths down on
Mark's time. Now it was Alonso's turn and the Spaniard was a tenth up after
sector one, four tenths up after sector two, and would finish with a time of
1m:14.125 to go fastest by a massive 0.459 seconds.
The final driver was Raikkonen and he was right on the pace been two tenths
up on Alonso after sector one, three tenths after sector two, and he would
shatter Fernando's time with a sub 1m:13 second lap, a time of 1m:13.644.
The Renault was 0.481 seconds behind the McLaren. After his win in Spain
Kimi is certainly showing an up turn in his fortunes. The session would end
with Mark and Nick in third and sixth respectively. |
