For the BMW
WilliamsF1 team the second Friday practice session at the Nurburgring would
see both drivers set encouraging times as they occupied the top two
positions for most of the session with Nick leading Mark. But the session
did have its problems as mark was to spin his car and would eventually
finish in sixth position while Nick would have his car stop and would finish
in third. But Nick's time was only beaten by two of the Friday drivers, Wurz
and Zonta, who could push their cars harder as they don't have to run on
Saturday..
The opening Friday practice would see McLaren's Alex Wurz the fastest driver
in the session and the Austrian would be the first driver out on the circuit
in the second. On his opening lap Alex would Wurz set a time of 1m:34.402.
Zonta, Liuzzi, Albers, Montagny and Monteiro would join Wurz.
Massa
would move into fourth position with a 1m:35.426, while Wurz would lower his
time with a 1m:33.807. As for the BMW WilliamsF1 team both Mark and Nick
would take to the track and Mark would set the fastest times in the first
two sectors to finish his lap with a time of 1m:32.088 to go fastest. Alonso
was also out and his first lap would see him in fourth with a time of
1m:34.344. McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen would quickly move into second with a
1m:32.644. Joining Mark at the front would be Nick who would take the top
spot with a time of 1:31.813. Jordan's Tiago Monteiro would spin his car,
stalling his engine, bringing out the yellow flags.
Michael Schumacher was in fourth with a 1m:33.733 but Montoya would push him
down the order one spot when he moved in fourth with a time of 1m:33.042.
Rubens Barrichello was now in fifth, a time of 1m:33.656.
So with nearly fifteen minutes of the session run we had the two FW27's
leading from the McLaren's of Raikkonen and Montoya. Fifth and sixth was the
two Ferrari's with Rubens improving his time, a 1m:33.142, still ahead of
Michael. Wurz and Zonta were in seventh and eighth. The Toyota's of Trulli
and Ralf Schumacher were down in tenth and twelfth. As for championship
leaders Renault their drivers were down the order but Alonso would improve
to
now be in fourth with a 1m:32.736. Fisichella was now in eighth with a time
of 1m:33.250.
After
not setting a time in the earlier session the BAR's of Button and Sato were
in twelfth and nineteenth. They were taking things very carefully as the
they had concerns over their engines. But the session would go badly for
Mark when he was to lose control of his car spinning it into a gravel trap
at Turn eleven.
It looked like Mark made a mistake and they saw him spin. He would watch his
car been lifted away. With twenty five
minutes of the session run it would still be the BMW WilliamsF1 cars at the
front but with Mark out it will be hard for him to stay near the front.
Another driver whose session would go wrong was Michael Schumacher as he
would park his car in his garage with a problem. Michael would complete just
five laps in the session. But for Rubens he would
move into third with a time of 1m:32.143. Alonso was in fourth with a
1m:32.503. As predicted Mark's second place came under threat and it would
be Raikkonen who would move into second with a time of 1m:31.870. Wurz was
now in sixth with a time of 1m:32.879.
But things would go further wrong for the WilliamsF1 team when Nick was to
have his car stop at the entrance of the pit lane. He would eventually make
it back to his garage. Zonta was now in sixth while team-mates Trulli and
Ralf were in thirteenth and seventeenth. Michael Schumacher was in tenth,
while in front of him in eighth and ninth were Montoya and Fisichella. Juan
Pablo was on a quick one with the fastest times in the first two sectors. He
would finish with a time of 1m:31.841 to now be in second.
With just over ten minutes of the session remaining the top ten was
Heidfeld, Montoya, Raikkonen, Webber, Barrichello, Alonso, Zonta, Wurz,
Fisichella and Trulli. Liuzzi was off the circuit with a failed Cosworth
engine. Ralf would move into the top ten with a 1m:33.098, as the last few
minutes of the session counted own.
With the last few minutes came the rush of cars out onto the track. Wurz was
fastest in the first and second sectors, and would move into first with a
time of 1m:30.623. He would be joined by another of the Friday drivers when
Zonta would set a time of 1m:30.630 to now be in second. With the end of the
session the top ten was Wurz, Zonta, Nick Heidfeld, Montoya, Raikkonen, Mark
Webber, Barrichello, Alonso, Fisichella and Ralf Schumacher. |
