| At least weekends British
Grand Prix both WilliamsF1 Fw24's ran with new aerodynamic bodywork, in
particular the rear end of the car which feature new side winglets and new
bodywork around the rear wheels.
But
the FW24 also had new air inlet ducts which also prevent the engine from
overheating. This design change was aimed at reducing the chance of engine
overheating, which has been a problem in the past. There was the case in
2001 in Germany where Montoya's engine failed after his car was stationary
in the pits for a lengthy time, seeing the engine overheat.
BMW Motorsport Director DR Mario Theissen was satisfied with regard to the
improvements made on the FW24. He commented: "We could see that the new lining
worked properly. The temperatures all remained in an acceptable range."
Theissen commented on how the team testing the new changes and their affect
on engine temperatures. He said: "On Friday we
simulated a starting phase with a two-minute standstill and a subsequent
unscheduled long stop. There the spectators might have noticed a
pistol-shaped device pointed at the rear end of the car - it was a
temperature sensor."
Even with these changes the team is aiming at improving the aerodynamics
even further. At Monza Antonio
Pizzonia is conducting further development of the car's aerodynamics.
