The
qualifying session for the 2005 Canadian Grand Prix would see a reversal of
the teams good result at the Nürburgring, where Heidfeld secure pole. At the
Gilles Villeneuve circuit both team drivers struggled to set a good time
with Nick and Mark finishing in a disappointing thirteenth and fourteenth
positions. Nick would out-qualify Mark by seventh tenths.
Qualifying
for the Canadian Grand Prix would be the second time that the new single lap
qualifying had been run. It should be kept in mind that the drivers are
running their race fuel. The first driver out in was Red Bull's Christian
Klein. The Austrian would set a time of 1m:18.249, which was two seconds
slower than his practice time.
The second driver out was BMW WilliamsF1's mark Webber. Mark would make a
few small mistakes in the first sector and the second would see him again
slower than Klein. He would finish his rather untidy lap with a time of
1m:17.749 to go fastest. Next was Ralf Schumacher and he was two tenths up
on Mark's time after the first sector. After the second he was almost a
second up. Ralf would finish with a time of 1m:16.382 to move into first
position.
Minardi's Patrick Freisacher was next out and the Austrian was lucky not to
spin his car in the final turn, finishing with a time of 1m:19.574 to be
fourth fastest. The last driver in this first group was Minardi team-mate
Albers. He was up on his team-mate after sector one, again after sector two
to finish with a time of 1m:18.214 to go ahead of even Klien.
The next group was made up of the Jordan's of Karthikeyan and Monteiro,
followed by the Sauber's of Massa and Villeneuve then BAR's Takuma Sato. Out
on his lap Karthikeyan would be slower than Albers through the first sector,
quicker in the second, to finish with a time of 1m:18.664 to finish ahead of
the Minardi of Freisacher and fifth position.
Monteiro was next out and he was down on the time set by his team-mate after
the second sector. He would finish with a time of 1m:19.034 to be behind his
team-mate. For Massa his lap would see him two tenths down after sector one,
he would lose a further tenth in the second to finish with a time of
1m:16.661 to move into second just 0.299 behind Ralf. Now it was
Villeneuve's turn and in front of his local crowd he would be almost as
quick as Ralf after the second sector. He would finish his lap with a time
of 1m:16.116 to go fastest.
For
the BAR team their first driver to go out was Sato. After the disappointment
of the early part of the season the BAR team must be looking for a good
result and the Japanese driver would give them something to smile about
going fastest with a time of 1m:15.729. Takuma could have gone faster had it
not been for a mistake in the final corner. the next group was Raikkonen,
Button, Trulli, Montoya, and Fisichella. Raikkonen was out and looking at
his practice times it is likely he will be close to the top of the times.
His lap would see him slightly slower than Sato in the first sector. After
sector two he was a tenth down and as he crossed the line his time would be
a 1m:15.923 to go second fastest. He may only be second but what fuel load
was he carrying?
Next came Button and Jenson was fastest in both the first two sectors, been
three tenths up. His lap time would be a 1m:15.217 to see him take
provisional pole by half a second.
Trulli was next and the Toyota was three tenths down after sector one. He
would finish his lap with a time of 1m:16.201 to move into fifth just ahead
of Ralf in sixth. The second McLaren of Montoya would start its lap and was
three tenths down after sector one, another two tenths after sector two, to
finish with a time of 1m:15.669 to split the two BAR's and move into second.
Now for the Renault's with Fisichella starting his lap. He was a tenth down
after the first sector. he would lose another three tenths in the second.
But with the quickest third sector seen so far he was in second with a time
of 1m:15.577. This would leave only five car left to run, one of them been
Nick Heidfeld. Michael Schumacher would be first out followed by Coulthard,
Barrichello, Heidfeld, and Alonso.
Michael
would start his lap and was two tenths down after sector one, matched Button
in sector two, and would have a good final sector that would see him move
into second with a time of 1m:15.475. Coulthard was out and he would be over
a second behind after the second sector. David would finish in eleventh with
a time of 1m:16.890. The second Ferrari of Barrichello was next. Could he
match Michael's time. But it would all go wrong as Rubens would return to
the pits after his out lap with smoke coming from his car. This will see him
start from the rear of the grid.
The final two drivers and Nick Heidfeld would start his lap. Pole in the
last race, could he repeat it. In a poor lap that would see him lose time
everywhere in his lap he would finish down in twelfth, locking up several
times. He was one place ahead of Mark in thirteenth. A very bad qualifying
for the WilliamsF1 team. The last driver was Alonso. The Renault driver
would lose four tenths after sector two, finishing his lap in third with a
time of 1m:15.561. But at least Fernando could be happy with the act that
his rivals are behind him on the grid. |
