For the BMW
WilliamsF1 team the second Friday practice session at Indianapolis was one that would see
one driver in the top six while the other was down in thirteenth. Again Nick
Heidfeld would lead his team-mate Mark Webber in the session with Mark 1.4
seconds slower than the leaders. Nick was one of a small number of drivers
who set times in the 1m:11 second bracket.
McLaren's
Juan Pablo Montoya was fastest in the first practice session for the 2005
United States Grand Prix. With the start of the second session it would be
Minardi's Patrick Friesacher who was first out joined by Red Bull's Scott
Speed and McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa. Also taking to the track were the
Jordan's of
Karthikeyan and Monteiro. Zonta and Albers were also out. The day would go
very badly for Zonta as he would crash his Toyota, finishing his practice.
It appeared to be a puncture of his left rear Michelin tyre that would see
his car end up in the gravel. As for the other drivers it would be de la
Rosa who would be fastest with a time of 1m:13.709. Next cane Speed,
1m:15.722, and Monteiro, a 1m:15.765.
After his failure to set a time in the first session McLaren's Kimi
Raikkonen was
out early setting the second quickest time with a 1m:14.082. De la Rosa had
improved his time to a 1m:12.995. Kimi would go fastest with a time of
1m:11.489. Also coming out early was Nick Heidfeld who would set a time that
would see him in third, 1m:13.528. Barrichello was in fourth with a
1m:14.249 but team-mate Michael Schumacher would put his Ferrari in third
with a 1m:13.162.
David Coulthard would put his Red Bull into fifth with a 1m:13.495. But it
would
become an all McLaren top three when Montoya moved into second with a
1m:12.382. But Coulthard would spoil this by setting a time of 1m:12.633 to
take third from de la Rosa. Toyota's Jarno Trulli was now in fifth, the
Ferrari's sixth and
seventh, and Nick in eighth. Mark Webber had yet to take to the circuit.
Massa would spin his Sauber at Turn one, but was able to continue. The same
could not be said of Ralf Schumacher who would crash his car at Turn 13
hitting the outside wall. He was able to get out of the car. This would see
the red flag come out. The back of Ralf's car broke away quickly sending him
into the wall heavily damaging his car. Thankfully for Ralf the accident was
not a repeat of his crash from last year and he was seen in the Toyota
garage taking to his crew. But Ralf's accident would see two Toyota's out of
the session.
The two Sauber's of Villeneuve and Massa were in ninth and tenth. Mark
Webber had also come out but had not set a time. The organisers had sweepers
out making sure that any small parts of Ralf's car were cleaned up. With the
session resuming it still had just over forty five minutes remaining.
Webber, Doornbos, Friesacher, Albers and de la Rosa would all come out onto
the track. Mark's first lap would see him in ninth with a time of 1m:13.627.
Nick was now down in eighth. De la Rosa was now in second with a 1m:12.119.
Fisichella and Trulli would move into fifth and sixth positions. with
Villeneuve
and Alonso seventh and eighth. Coulthard would spin his Red Bull at the end
of the main straight. Alonso would improve to now be in seventh, a
1m:13.007. At the front it would be Rubens Barrichello who would split the
McLaren's by moving into second with a 1m:11.746. Montoya would improve to
also be in the 1m:11 seconds, a 1m:11.832, but would remain in third. Nick
and Mark were now down in twelfth and thirteenth.
Michael Schumacher would join his team-mate by moving into third with a time
of
1m:11.758. Jenson Button had yet to set a time. Michael Schumacher would go
off the track damaging his left barge board. Alonso was now eighth with a
1m:12.879. Klein would shoot up the times moving into seventh with a
1m:12.664. Massa was now in sixth with a 1m:12.464. On his first lap Button
would go tenth fastest with a 1m:12.803, team-mate Sato was in twelfth.
With just under half and hour of the session remaining Kimi would go even
faster
with a time of 1m:11.228 to now be over 0.5 seconds ahead of Rubens. Nick
and
Mark were now in fifteenth and sixteenth. But Kimi's time was beaten by
Montoya with a stunning lap time of 1m:1.118 to go fastest. Coulthard was in
fifth with a 1m:12.076. Team-mate Klein was in eighth.
Now Mark Webber had the embarrassing site of a Jordan been quicker than his
FW27, with Doornbos splitting the two FW27's. Barrichello would go off the
track but was lucky not to damage his car. Trulli was now in ninth with a
1m:12.777. The Renault's of Alonso and Fisichella were now in seventh and
eighth. So with fifteen minutes of the session remaining there was two
McLaren's ahead of two Ferrari's. Fisichella would spin his Renault at the
end of the Hulman straight, while Coulthard's session would end as he was
having gearbox problems. Trulli was now in eighth with a 1m:12.344.
With just over five minutes of the session remaining Nick was out and with a
fastest second sector would move up the order to now be in fifth with a
1m:11.825. Mark was still in seventeenth. Scott Speed was now in eighth with
a 1m:12.143. Mark was a quick lap in the closing minutes but his lap would
only be good enough for thirteenth, a 1m:12.578.
With the end of the session the top ten was Montoya followed by Raikkonen,
Barrichello, Michael Schumacher, Heidfeld, Coulthard, de la Rosa, Speed,
Alonso, and Trulli. |
