In a session
that would see the drivers struggle to match the times set during Friday
practice the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers of Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld would
set times that would see them in sixth and seventh. It was a sesion that
would see the track damp in places after rain had hit the track.
The
third practice session for the French Grand Prix would see Minardi's Patrick
Friesacher take to the track first, followed by team-mate Christijan Albers.
Both drivers would complete their installation lap as others also took to the
track including the Renaults of Fisichella and Alonso, and both McLaren's of
Montoya and Raikkonen.
Also completing their installation lap was the Jordan pair of Karthikeyan
and Monteiro. With ten minutes of the session run no driver had set a time and
neither BMW WilliamsF1's Mark Webber or Nick Heidfeld had taken to the
track.
Both Toyota's had also come out. Nick would take to the track and would set the fastest first sector time,
28.4 seconds, followed by the fastest second sector time, 31.8 seconds. He would
complete the lap setting a time of 1m:30.935 to go fastest but well on the
pace of the Friday practice. He would improve this with a 1m:30.272. Massa had
also come out for his installation lap.
With twenty five minutes of the session remaining only Nick had set a time.
Fisichella would set a time of 27.1 seconds for the first sector, followed
by 30.4 for the second. He would finish with a time of 1m:26.798 to go fastest. He
had completed five laps but only set a time on one of them. Team-mate Alonso
would set his first lap time, a 1m:26.904 to move into second. Fisichella would
improve his time with a lap of 1m:26.651.
Raikkonen would complete his first lap setting a time of 1m:27.123 to be in
third, with twenty minutes of the session remaining. Mark Weber had taken to the
track to complete his installation lap. Kimi would improve his time to go
fastest with a lap of 1m:26.483 but Alonso would take this spot with a time
of 1m:25.934. But compared to de la Rosa's time of 1m:14.460 these times
were very slow, with the drivers suffering from a lack of grip due to the
wet conditions.
Mark Webber would set his first lap time, a 1m:28.425, fifth position, while
BAR's Jenson Button was in fourth with a 1m:27.344. Nick was now down in
sixth, but the German would improve to move ahead of Mark with a 1m:27.510.
Albers would set a time of 1m:31.872.
With fifteen minutes of the session left it was Alonso from Raikkonen,
Fisichella, Button, Heidfeld and Webber. Red Bull's David Coulthard was out
and he would move into fourth with a time of 1m:27.019. Ten minutes
remaining and neither Ferrari had taken to the track. Klein would come out
to be the only driver on the track. But Mark would come out with five
minutes of the session remaining.
Mark would set the fastest first sector, a 26.8, followed by a slow second
sector, 30.9, to complete the lap with a time of 1m:27.313 to move into
sixth ahead of Nick. Fisichella was out on a quick lap and would finish with
a time of 1m:24.922 to move ahead of his team-mate and go fastest.
Friesacher was in eighth. After completing an extensive number of laps on
Friday it appeared that most drivers were limiting their track time.
Alonso would take the top spot away from his team-mate with a time of
1m:23.939 as the session came to a close. Only nine drivers would set a time
during the session, Alonso followed by Fisichella, Raikkonen, Coulthard,
Button, Webber, Heidfeld, Friesacher and Albers.
