For the BMW
WilliamsF1 team qualifying for the 2005 German Grand Prix would show an
encouraging sign of pace from both drivers with Mark and Nick qualifying in
sixth and seventh grid positions.
With McLaren's
Kimi Raikkonen leading the times in practice at Hockenheim
qualifying would commence with new Minardi driver Robert Doornbos first out
followed by Jordan's Narian Karthikeyan and team-mate Christijan Albers.
Doornbos would start his lap and with a first sector time of 17.0, followed
by 36.7 in the second, he would complete his lap with a time of 1m:18.313.
Karthikeyan would start his qualifying lap and was six tenths down after the
first sector. He would abort his lap with his car looking very difficult to
drive. He would return to the pit lane ensuring that he would start from the
back of the grid.
Next was Albers and the Minardi driver was well ahead of his team-mate
finishing his lap with a time of 1m:17.519 to go fastest. Next out was
Jordan's Tiago Monteiro and he would finish his lap behind Doornbos. The
final driver in the first group was BAR's Takuma Sato. His lap would start
and he was six tenths up on Albers after sector one. The rest of his lap
would see him extend his lead over Albers to finish with a time of 1m:15.501
to take provisional pole.
Red Bull's Christian Klien was the first driver out in the second group. He
would be two tenths down after sector one, but he would recover this time in the
second.
He would finish his lap with a time of 1m:15.635 to be second to
Sato. Next out was Sauber's Jacques Villeneuve. The Canadian was two tenths off
Sato's time after sector two. With a poor third sector he would finish with
a time of 1m:16.012 and in third.
The second Red Bull of David Coulthard was next out and he was four tenths
down after the first two sector. He would complete his lap with a time of
1m:15.679 to finish fractions behind team-mate Klein. Now it was the first
of the BMW WilliamsF1 drivers with Nick Heidfeld out followed by team-mate
Mark Webber. Nick was two tenths off Sato's time in sector one, he would
pick up time in the second, and the final sector would see him take
provisional pole by just .098 seconds.
Now it was Mark's turn and his lap would see him slower than Sato after the
first sector. His second would see him pick up time and after a great final
sector he would finish his lap with a time of 1m:15.070 to go fastest ahead
of his team-mate. The next group of drivers would see Massa out first. The
Brazilian would start his lap and would finish just ahead of his team-mate Villeneuve
with a time of 1:16.009, good enough for sixth.
Now it was the turn of Toyota's Jarno Trulli. His lap would see him two
tenths behind Webber after sector one. He would lose further time in sector two to
finish with a time of 1m:15.532, and fourth place. Team-mate Ralf was next
up and the German would only manage seventh after having lost a lot of time in
the final sector. The first of the Ferrari's with Rubens Barrichello was next
out.
Rubens would be four tenths off the pace after sector two. He would finish
with a time of 1m:16.230 to be in tenth. Now it was team-mate Michael's turn and he
was able to be close to Mark's time in sector one.
His second sector would
see him ahead of Mark and he would cross the line fastest with a time of
1m:15.006 just 0.064 seconds ahead of Mark. But Michael had yet to have
Button, Fisichella, Raikkonen, Alonso, and Montoya set their times.
Next came Jenson Button. He would be close to team-mate Sato after the first
sector, fastest in the second, and he would finish his lap with a time of
1m:14.759 to go fastest. Now it was the first of the Renault's of
Fisichella. He would be fastest in the first sector, but he would lose time in the second
to be a tenth down. The final sector would see him cross the line in second with a
time of 1m:14.927, just 0.168 behind Button.
Now it was Kimi's turn and he would start his lap and was fastest by over a
tenth in the first sector. He would pick up further time in the second. The
final sector would see him make a small mistake at the hairpin but would finish
ahead of Jenson with a time of 1m:14.320 to take provisional pole by 0.439
seconds. Next came championship rival Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard was 0.3
down after sector one. His second sector was not much better and he would
finish with a time of 1m:14.904 to be 0.584 behind Raikkonen.
The final driver was McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya. He would start his lap
and was just ahead after sector one. His second would see him down by a
tenth to his team-mate. He was looking good for second place but in the
final sector it would all go horribly wrong when he was to lose control of
his car in the final turn and crashed into the wall. He would be OK but
would have to start from the back of the grid. Juan Pablo was to hit the
kerb on entry into the final corner. |
