Italian GP Friday 2nd Practice

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the second Friday practice for the 2005 Italian Grand Prix would continue to show encouraging pace from both drivers with Mark Webber and Nick Heidfeld finishing in fifth and sixth. If you take out the Friday drivers Mark and Nick were effectively in third and fourth places.

With McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa fastest in the morning practice and BMW
WilliamsF1's Mark Webber second, the second Friday practice session would get under way. De la Rosa would be first out and he was joined by Red Bull's Tonio Liuzzi and Toyota's Ricard Zonta.

HeidfeldPedro would quickly set a time going fastest with a 1m:23.683. He would improve this with a 1m:22.729. In second was Liuzzi with a 1m:24.439. Zonta was in third, but Ricard would move into second with a 1m:24.156. For Jordan's Nicolas Kiesa his session would come to an end when he was to suffer an engine failure bringing out the oil flags now at the first chicane. Zonta would improve with a 1m:23.763. Sauber's Felipe was in fourth with a 1m:24.511.

Both of the Ferrari's, BAR's Jenson Button, and Sauber's Jacques Villeneuve had also taken to the circuit. Enrico Toccacelo was in sixth with a 1m:27.574, 5.11 seconds behind de la Rosa. On his first lap Michael Schumacher went fifth fastest with a time of 1m:25.064. Villeneuve was in sixth, while team-mate Massa was in third.

But Button would jump ahead of Massa going third fastest with a 1m:24.045. Barrichello was in eighth. Nick Heidfeld was out while Trulli was now in third with a 1m:23.919. with ten minutes run the order was de la Rosa from Zonta, Trulli, Button, Michael Schumacher, Heidfeld, Barrichello, Massa, Villeneuve and Liuzzi. Michael was struggling having an off track moment on one of his laps.

Button would move ahead of Trulli with a 1m:23.526. Kimi Raikkonen was also out and on his first alp he would go fastest with a time of 1m:21.857. Mark Webber was yet to set a time. Ralf Schumacher was now in fourth with a 1m:23.126. Kimi would lower his time with a 1m:21.735. Mark's first lap would see a time of 1m:23.858 to be in eighth one place ahead of Nick. Mark would improve his time seeing him move into fifth with a time of 1m:23.408.

Montoya was out and would move into third with a 1m:22.438. Mark was now in sixth while Nick was in tenth. Sato would move ahead of Nick pushing him down one place. Juan Pablo went faster with a 1m:22.174 but was still in third. So we had a McLaren 1-2-3 followed by the two Toyota's and then Mark Webber. Slowest was Robert Doornbos with a 1m:26.703. The order was Raikkonen from de la Rosa, Montoya, Trulli, Ralf Schumacher, Webber, Zonta, Button, Michael Schumacher, and Sato.

We would now see the first of the Renault's set a time with Fisichella moving into fourth with a time of 1m:22.508. Barrichello was now in seventh with a 1m:23.213. Michael was now in fifth with a 1m:22.749. Zonta was in sixth with a 1m:22.889. Fisichella would improve his time with a 1m:22.440. Mark and Nick were now in tenth and thirteenth places. Nick was 2.144 seconds slower than pace setter Raikkonen.

There was thirty minutes remaining in the session and Fernando Alonso, David Coulthard and Christian Klien had yet to set a time. Michael Schumacher would put his car into the barriers in the final sector when he slid off the track. For Mark Webber his session would improve with a time of 1m:22.032 that would see him move into third. He was joined by Nick who was fourth with a time of 1m:22.107. Both Coulthard and Klein had come out. Alonso would finally come out with just over twenty minutes remaining.

Klien and Coulthard were now in fourteenth and twenty first places. Alonso's first lap would see him in ninth with a time of 1m:22.897. Coulthard was now in fifteenth. The top ten was Raikkonen, de la Rosa, Webber, Heidfeld, Montoya, Fisichella, Michael Schumacher, Zonta, and Trulli. Alonso was now in seventh with a 1m:22.619.

Testing pace setter Montoya would move to the top of the times with a 1m:21.583 making it a McLaren 1-2-3 again. Mark and Nick were now in fourth and fifth. The Sauber's of Massa and Villeneuve were in twelfth and fourteenth. But Toyota would spoil it for McLaren when their Friday driver Zonta would go fastest with a 1m:21.409. Liuzzi was now in eighth with a 1m:22.560. Zonta would improve with a 1m:21.203. The Renault's were down in eighth and ninth.

With five minutes left in the session there were few changes in places
especially in the top ten. Klein would move into tenth with a 1m:22.600 while Zonta would set an even quicker time a 1m:20.531. Would the McLaren's challenge this give the fact that Zonta will not appear on Saturday. The same could be said for Liuzzi was now in in seventh. Fisichella and Alonso were in ninth and tenth.

With the clock counting down the final minute there would be no change at the front with Zonta finishing the session fastest from Montoya and Raikkonen. De la Rosa was in fourth followed by Mark and Nick in fifth and sixth. The rest of the top ten was made up of Liuzzi, Trulli, Fisichella and Alonso. The BAR's of Sato and Button were down in seventeenth and eighteenth.

The full order was Zonta, Montoya, Raikkonen, de la Rosa, Webber, Heidfeld, Liuzzi, Trulli, Fisichella, Alonso, Klien, M Schumacher, Massa, R Schumacher, Villeneuve, Barrichello, Sato, Button, Coulthard, Monteiro, Karthikeyan,
