Both BMW WilliamsF1 drivers would struggle in qualifying for the 2005 Italian GP. Mark and Antonio would both finish outside the top ten with Mark in fourteenth and Antonio sixteenth. After their encouraging practice result this could only be described as a major disappointment.

After producing
competitive practice times the BMW WilliamsF1 team would have thought that
they would see team driver Mark Webber qualify well for the Italian Grand
Prix. But again he was not able to deliver finish in fourteenth grid
position. Team-mate Antonio Pizzonia was two places further back in
sixteenth.
Qualifying for
the Italian Grand Prix would see the BMW WilliamsF1 cars first
out with Pizzonia first followed by Webber. Antonio would start his flying
lap and sets a time of 26.8 in the first sector. His second was a 28.7 to finish
with a far from spectacular time of 1m:23.291.
Now it was Marks turn and his fist sector time was a 26.5, followed by a
28.4 in sector two. Mark would move into the top spot with a time of 1m:22.560 to
be 0.731 ahead of his team-mate.
Next out was Sauber's Felipe Massa. The
Brazilian would finish his lap with a time of 1m:23.060 to move into second.
Now it was the turn of Ferrari's Michael Schumacher. Michael was close to
Mark's time despite a lock up at the first chicane. His second sector was
the best so far and he would finish with a time of 1m:21.721 to move into
first, much to the delight of the Ferrari fans.
The final driver in the first group was Christian Albers in his Minardi. He
would be close to Antonio's time in the first sector but a run though the
second Lesmo corner gravel would see him finish with a disappointing time of
1m:26.964.
The first driver out in the next group would be Jordan's Tiago Monteiro,
using the new EJ15B. He would finish his lap with a time of 1m:24.666 to move into
fifth but close to three seconds of Michael's time. team-mate Narian
Karthikeyan was next out. Despite setting a personal best time he would
finish behind Tiago in sixth with a time of 1m:25.859. This was 1.2 seconds slower
than his team-mate.
The second Minardi of Doornbos was next out and he would finish his lap just
behind Tiago with a time of 1m:24.904. Ralf Schumacher and Jacques
Villeneuve would make up the second group of drivers. Ralf's lap would see
him lose time in the second sector but he would still be able to finish in a
strong second place with a time of 1m:22.266, 0.545 behind brother Michael.
Jacques would start his lap and would be ahead of team-mate Massa after the
second sector. He would finish in third with a time of 1m:22.356. This would
put him ahead of both WilliamsF1 cars.
The next group of drivers would be lead out by Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello.
Following him would be Sato, Klein, Coulthard, and Trulli. Rubens would
start his flying lap and was fastest in the first sector by two tenths. he was
still up after sector two. But Rubens would lose a fraction in the final sector to
finish with a time of 1m:21.962 to move into second.
Third fastest in practice Takuma Sato would start his lap and was fastest in
the second sector to be a tenth up. He would finish with the fastest third
sector time to go fastest with a lap time of 1m:21.477. The first of the Red
Bull cars was out with Christian Klein and the Austrian would finish with a
time of 1m:22.532 to move into sixth. Mark and Antonio were currently in
seventh and ninth places but they both would most likely finish outside the
top ten.
Red Bull team-mate David Coulthard started his lap and would lose time over
the lap but was able to finish ahead of team-mate Klein. David would set a
time of 1m:22.304 to move into fifth. The final driver in this group was
Toyota's Jarno Trulli. Jarno was a tenth down after sector one but was fastest in the
second. He would lose a tenth in the final sector that would see him finish in
second just 0.163 behind Sato, a time of 1m:21.640.
The final group would see Button lead out Fisichella, Montoya, Alonso, and
Raikkonen. For Kimi he would have to suffer another loss of ten grid
positions as he was forced to make an engine change after it was felt that his
original engine would not last the race. As such he would lose ten grid positions.
Jenson would start his lap and was a tenth down after sector one. But he was
fastest in the second and with a time of 27.3 seconds in the final sector
would go fastest, beating his team-mate by 0.108 seconds. Jenson's time was a
1m:21.369. The first of the Renault's with Fisichella was next but the
Italian was four tenths down after sector one. He made a mistake at the first
chicane. After sector two he was half a second down. He would finish with a
disappointing time of 1m:22.068 to move into sixth. Mark and Antonio were
now down in eleventh and thirteenth positions.
Montoya was next out and he was fastest in the first sector, three tenths
up. After sector two he was still ahead and with the fastest final sector time
he would finish with a time of 1m:21.054 to go fastest by 0.315 seconds. Now it
was Alonso's turn and the Spaniard was close to Juan Pablo's times in the
first two sectors. But it was not enough as he would finish in second with a time
of 1m:21.319.
The final driver Kimi Raikkonen would start his lap and was close to Juan
Pablo's first sector time. He was fastest in the second to be two tenths up.
He would cross the line with a time of 1m:20.878 to take pole position. This
would see him start his race from eleventh. Mark and Antonio were in fourteenth
and sixteenth, a disappointing result for the BMW WilliamsF1 team.
