It would be a race that would see no points for the BMW WilliamsF1 team in the Brazilian GP. Both of the teams drivers would be forced to retire as a result of a first corner accident between Antonio and Coulthard. Mark was also involved in the other drivers accident, seeing him retire in his pit.

Brazilian Grand Prix Review

For the BMW WilliamsF1 team the Brazilian Grand Prix was all over even before the teams two drivers had gotten through the first corner, the Senna S. Antonio was to be involved in an accident with David Coulthard that would see Antonio's car retire on the spot. Mark was to be an innocent victim in the other drivers accident. He would suffer damage to his car that would see him pit at the end of the first lap and retire his car after a small fire had started at the rear of his car.

With Jarno Trulli losing ten places on the grid due to an engine change Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia would start the Brazilian Grand Prix from thirteenth and fourteenth. Takuma Sato would start from the rear of the grid and Sauber's Jacques Villeneuve would start from the pit lane. There would be patches of dampness on the track. The cars would all get away for the parade lap and would form up on the grid. If Alonso finishes third or better he will be world champion.

WebberMonteiro would pull into the pits but the race would start and it would be Alonso leading with Montoya second. Fisichella was in third with Kimi attacking him. Kimi would eventually pass him. Pizzonia and Coulthard would make contact at the start seeing both retire. Mark was also involved and would pit at the end of the first lap. What a disaster for the BMW WilliamsF1 team. Marks car would catch fire in the pit and we would see the second WilliamsF1 car retire. Despite the fire Mark's car had been damaged in the rear.

The crash at the start would see the safety car come out. The race would
restart on lap three. Montoya would pass Alonso for the lead at the Reta Oposta corner. Kimi was in third, followed by Michael Schumacher and Fisichella. It would be a fastest lap for Montoya, 1:16.197 on lap three. Juan Pablo would repeat this the next lap with a 1m:13.959. Fisichella had passed Michael for fourth. Button was in sixth.

Mark Webber said of the accident: "Got away ok. David and Antonio touched and Antonio speared into the right of me." Lap six and Montoya's lead was out to 2.8 seconds. Montoya would set another fastest lap on lap seven, 1m:13.160. Klein was in seventh followed by Barrichello and Ralf Schumacher. Juan Pablo would continue to extend his lead over Alonso. A battle between Jenson Button, Christian Klien and Rubens Barrichello was going on.

WebberLap eleven and Juan Pablo's lead was now 4.3 seconds. Kimi was 1.9 seconds behind the second placed Renault. The Toyota's of Ralf Schumacher and Trulli were in ninth and thirteenth. Lap sixteen and Alonso was start to pish lowering Juan Pablo's lead to 4.0 seconds. The following lap and Alonso would set a fastest lap, 1m:12.827. Massa would pit from tenth on what appeared to be a three stop strategy. Lap twenty and Juan Pablo had pulled his lead back out to 4.0 seconds. Kimi was now 3.0 seconds behind Alonso. Lap twenty two and Alonso would pit.

They would adjust his front tyre pressures. He would come out in front of Klein in sixth place. The following lap and Fisichella would pit from third. Barrichello would also come in. Michael Schumacher was now in third. Fisichella was in eighth. Lap twenty five and Klein would pit.

Kimi was just 5.5 seconds behind Juan Pablo. Button was in fourth and Alonso was now in fifth. Juan Pablo would lose time making his way through traffic. Lap twenty seven and Michael would pit. Button and Ralf Schumacher would also come in. Michael was able to come back out in front of Fisichella. Juan Pablo would set another fastest lap, 1m:12.650, on lap twenty seven.

Lap twenty eight and Montoya would pit. Kimi was pushing hard with a fastest lap, 1m:12.268, been 20.4 seconds ahead of second placed Montoya. It was
announced that Mark had returned to the track but was twenty four laps in arrears. What the purpose of this was as it is most unlikely that it would have an impact on his qualifying position in Japan. On lap thirty one Kimi would pit from the lead, returning in second after a ten second stop. Things were looking goog for Alonso as he was in an unchallenged third place.

WebberTrulli would pit on lap thirty three. Kimi was just 1.7 seconds behind team-mate Montoya. Sixth placed Sato had yet to pit. Seventh placed Button was been challenged by Barrichello. Lap thirty eight and Sato would make his first stop. Kimi was close the gap to Juan Pablo. On lap forty it was just 1.3 seconds. But traffic would see Kimi lose some time bringing Montoya's lead to 2.1 seconds on lap forty one. Rubens was still attacking Button but could not get past the BAR.

Lap forty three and Montoya's lead was now 3.1 seconds over Kimi. Rubens would finally pass Button going into the Senna S corner. There were only nine cars on the lead lap on lap forty five. The order was Montoya, Raikkonen, Alonso, Michael Schumacher, Fisichella, Barrichello, Button, and Klein. Massa would pit from thirteenth on lap forty eight. The next lap and Alonso would pit from third, returning in fifth. Team-mate Fisichella would pit from fifth. He would come out just in front of Rubens.

Rubens would pit on lap fifty two. Juan Pablo was 4.3 seconds ahead of
Raikkonen. On lap fifty four the first of the McLaren's would come in, that of Montoya. There would be no problems for Juan Pablo as he exited the pits. Michael would also pit from fourth. Klein would also pit. Mark Webber would make a pit stop. It looked likely he would move past Robert Doornbos who had retired seeing him run fourth in Japanese qualifying.

Lap fifty seven and Button would pit from sixth. Kimi was now 17.7 seconds ahead of Juan Pablo. Lap sixty and Kimi would pit from the lead. Would he come out in front of his team-mate, but the answer would be no as Montoya retook the lead. Kimi was not able to challenge his team-mate and by lap sixty two the lead was now 1.3 seconds. Alonso was 22.5 seconds behind Kimi. Lap sixty four and the leading McLaren's had eased off their pace, now running in the 1m:14 seconds. Only six cars were on the lead lap with five laps remaining in the race.

The McLaren's would continue their formation run to the finish scoring a 1-2 for Ron Dennis. Juan Pablo would win from Raikkonen. With their 1-2 McLaren would move ahead in the constructors championship but with his third place it would be Renault's Fernando Alonso who would be the 2005 Drivers champion, the youngest ever at 24 years of age. This record was previously held by Emerson Fittipaldi. It was a brilliant achievement from the young Spaniard.
