After the disaster of the Brazilian Grand Prix the BMW WilliamsF1 team was
back to work testing at the Jerez circuit preparing for the final rounds of
the 2005 Formula One season, the Japanese and Chinese Grands
Prix.
Present
for the days testing was Mark Webber, test driver Nico Rosberg and 2004
Formula BMW ADAC Champion Sebastian Vettel. The test was conducted in sunny
conditions. The test will run for two days and will be the last for the 2005
season.
The only team present at the circuit was the BMW WilliamsF1 team. The three
drivers would work through various programmes. For Mark these would focus on
tyre evaluations and set-up work. Nico would work on testing of the brakes,
including the testing of various braking materials. He was also involved in
tyre testing. For Sebastian his time in the car was spent simply getting
used to the demands and complexities of a F1 car.
Mark completed 125 laps, with a best lap 1m:17.917. Nico covered 37 laps
with a best of 1m:19.265. Sebastian Vettel completed 25 laps, with a best
time of 1:21.364 minutes.
Vettel spoke of
his experience in a F1 car. He said:
"It was an unbelievable experience! The brakes, the g-forces and the power of the engine are beyond
description. Thanks to BMW and WilliamsF1 for giving me this chance to test.
The test team looked after me brilliantly and I learnt plenty."
BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen
added: "Sebastian made a
successful switch from around 220 bhp in Formula 3 to almost four times that
in
a Formula One car. The whole team was pleased with him. He now has a
first-hand
idea of the extreme dynamics involved and the physical demands on the
driver.
That experience will stand him in good stead in the future."
WilliamsF1 Test Team Manager Tim Newton commented on the days testing. He
said: "On our first day at Jerez, the drivers managed to complete a substantial
amount of mileage, in particular Mark, who recorded over 500kms while tyre
testing for Michelin. Nico was also on duty and covered 37 laps of tyre work
before his half day session was ended prematurely by a technical problem.
Nico
is now on his way to Bahrain for the final round of the GP2 Championship.
With
a three point lead in the Drivers’ rankings, the team would like to wish him
all the best for a successful weekend." |
