BMW WilliamsF1's Mark Webber would finish fourth in a thrilling Japanese GP. Team-mate Antonio Pizzonia would retire on lap ten after having spun his car into the gravel. Mark had been running in third but was passed in the closing stages of the race. This is a great result for Mark and the team.

Japanese Grand Prix Review

With the BMW WilliamsF1 team drivers Mark Webber and Antonio Pizzonia seventh and twelfth on the grid the teams would prepare for the start of the fity three lap Japanese Grand Prix. The forecast had no rain predicted, not like yesterdays waterlogged qualifying. At the front of the grid we had the two major Japanese car manufacturers represented with Toyota's Ralf Schumacher on pole and Honda's Jenson Button next to him in second.

WebberThe cars would move away on their formation lap. The McLaren's of Raikkonen and Montoya would start from the rear of the grid. The start of the race would see Ralf leading from Fisichella. Button would make a poor start. Sato and
Barrichello would both get off the track at the first corner. Sato was able to continue with a damaged front wing. Button was running in third.

At the chicane Kimi would run wide but for Montoya his race was over when he ran wide at the last corner and went into the barrier. He would rip off both left hand side tyres in the accident. The safety car would come out and Rubens would pit to replace a tyre that was punctured in the incident with Sato. Sato would also pit and have a new front wing fitted. Ralf, Fisichella, Button, Coulthard, Webber, Klien, Michael and Alonso made up the top eight. Kimi was in twelfth.

With five laps complete Ralf was leading with Giancarlo just 0.8 behind the Toyota. Mark was just 5.3 seconds behind the leader. Antonio was in tenth just 0.6 seconds behind ninth place Villeneuve. Rubens would make another stop. The race would restart on lap seven. With both Renault's in the points things were looking good for them in the fight with McLaren for the constructors championship. The race would restart with Ralf leading from Fisichella and Button in third.

PizzoniaMichael would pass Klein for sixth at the restart going into the first corner. The second Toyota of Trulli was in seventeenth. Ralf would set a fastest lap, 1m:33.647. His lead was out to 1..7 seconds. Lap eight and Mark was just 0.8 behind Coulthard and just 4.9 seconds behind Ralf. Kimi was now in eleventh. Another fastest lap from Ralf, 1m:32.795. His lead had grown to now be 2.1 seconds on lap nine. The gap between the top six cars was around two seconds. The only challenge was coming from Alonso attacking Michael.

Antonio's race would come to an end when he would spin his car at the Degner curve. His car would be stuck in the gravel. This would do little to enhance his position with the team. Alonso would allow Klien to pass him, while Trulli would crash his car damaging the right side and ending his race. Alonso would recover and start to attack the Red Bull car. Trulli had been involved in a collision with Sato. Mark was still in fifth.

Alonso would pass Klein at the first corner seeing him now in seventh. Ralf would pit on lap fourteen, 6.8 seconds, joined by Karthikeyan from twelfth. Ralf would come out in front of Villeneuve. Alonso was pushing hard looking to close in onto the rear of Michael's Ferrari. Ralf was in ninth. Fisichella was leading Button by 3.5 seconds. Mark was now in fourth, following third placed Coulthard. Lap fifteen and a fastest lap to Alonso, 1m:32.770. Kimi was in seventh. Lap sixteen and Doornbos would pit.

Alonso was right with Michael. Kimi would set a fastest lap on lap sixteen, 1m:32.084, as he closed in onto Alonso. Fisichella would extend his lead to Button, 4.0 seconds, on lap seventeen. Michael appeared to be holding up both Alonso and Raikkonen. Alonso was attacking Michael's Ferrari but could not find a way past. Mark was just 1.7 seconds behind Coulthard.

WebberLap twenty one and Fisichella would pit from the lead. Alonso would pass Michael in an outside move going into the 130R corner, just brilliant.
Fisichella would return behind Kimi. Lap twenty one and Alonso would set another fastest lap, 1m:31.599. He was now just 4.9 seconds behind third placed Mark Webber. Pole sitter Ralf was still in ninth. Lap twenty three and both Button and Alonso would pit. They would be joined by Klein. This would see Coulthard leading from Mark. It would be an eleven second stop for Jenson.

The next lap and both David and Mark would pit from first and second. Alonso was now in tenth. Mark was able to get out in front of Coulthard in their pit stops. Michael was now leading from Kimi, with Fisichella third. Ralf was now in fourth and Button fifth. Mark was in sixth ahead of Coulthard. Kimi would challenge Michael going into Turn one but Michael was been very defensive. Lap twenty six and Massa would pit from tenth.

Lap twenty seven and both Michael and Kimi would pit. Fisichella was again in the lead with Ralf in second. Mark was now in fourth behind third placed
Button. Michael and Kimi were now in fifth and sixth. The last driver to stop would be Villeneuve. Mark was now just 1.3 seconds behind Button. Ralf would make a second stop on lap twenty nine. The order was now Fisichella from Button, Webber, Raikkonen, Michael, Alonso, Coulthard, and Ralf. Raikkonen was able to pass Michael by going on the outside of the first corner.

Lap thirty one and Fisichella was now 14.7 seconds ahead of second placed Button. But Mark was just 0.9 seconds behind the BAR. By lap thirty three Kimi was right behind Mark, while Mark was still challenging second placed Button. Alonso was now in fifth after having been able to get past Michael. Lap thirty five and Fisichella's lead was out to 17.2 seconds. There was a three way fight for second between Button, Webber, and Raikkonen.

Lap thirty seven and Alonso would pit, 7.5 seconds. Team-mate Fisichella would extend his lead out to 18.1 seconds over Button. Fernando was out in eighth. The following lap would see Fisichella pit from the lead. Button was now lading from Mark and Raikkonen. On lap forty two both Button and Mark would pit. They would be joined by Klein. This would see Kimi leading. Mark was able to squeeze past Button on the pit lane exit. The next lap and Michael would pit from third.

Lap forty two and Kimi was leading Fisichella by 7.2 seconds, but Kimi had yet to make his second stop. Mark was now in fifth 4.3 seconds behind Ralf. In third was Coulthard. Alonso was just 0.7 behind Mark after having passed Button for sixth. At the f5ront Kimi would set a fastest lap, 1m:31.540, on lap forty four. Coulthard would pit joined by Ralf Schumacher.

PizzoniaLap forty six and Kimi would pit from the lead. Raikkonen would rejoin in second with Mark third and Alonso fourth. Button was in fifth, Coulthard sixth, Michael and Ralf are seventh and eighth. Fisichella was leading Kimi by 5.4 seconds. Mark was 11.4 seconds behind the McLaren but was be challenged by Alonso.

The following lap and Kimi had reduced this to just 4.3 seconds. Alonso was just 0.6 seconds behind Mark in their fight for third. Lap forty eight and Kimi was now just 3.0 seconds behind the leading Renault. Alonso just 0.1 behind Mark with just five laps remaining. Button was n fifth, Coulthard sixth. But for Mark he would see Alonso pass him going into the first corner. Regardless of his loss of third place it has bee a great race for the WilliamsF1 driver. With four laps left Kimi was now just 1.8 seconds behind Fisichella.

Kimi was now right behind the Renault, with Alonso 16.1 seconds further back. Mark was safe in an excellent fourth. Two laps and Kimi was just 0.2 seconds behind. Would he pass the Renault to lead the race? Kimi would try to pass in the run to Turn one but could not complete the move. The last lap and Kimi was right behind Fisichella. Going into Turn one he was able to pass on the outside of the first corner, a brilliant move. He was now leading the Japanese Grand Prix after starting from last. Kimi would take the win from Fisichella, Alonso, Webber, Button, Coulthard, Michael and Ralf Schumacher.

A fourth place for Mark Webber is a great result for the team. It was disappointing for the team that Antonio retired early from the race. The result of the race would see the Constructors Championship go down to the wire in the next race in China next weekend.
