2006 will see the WilliamsF1 run
their new FW28 without manufacturer support, after having lost the supply of
BMW engines. But despite this return to the ranks of the independent team team
boss Frank Williams still feels that his team can work on finishing in the top three
of the Constructors championship.
At
the launch of the FW28 Frank spoke of his goals for the 2006 season.
He said: ""While secretly we'd
like to win all the races, our realistic thinking is that if we get in the
top three in the constructors' championship we will have done a good job.
"We tend to be more impressed with brain power than budget power. Not having
a manufacturer is a disadvantage. You can just get more done and more
quickly by means of having more people and spending more money."
"But there is still room for being nimble and agile, being able to recognise
problems ahead of other people, and maybe that is what we can demonstrate we
can do."
Joining Frank in his views of the 2006 season was Technical Director Sam
Michael.
Sam added his views saying: "The
most important thing is to re-establish ourselves as a top team. We want to
make sure we reverse that slide."
Team co-owner Patrick Head was more cautious in his views. He spoke of how
it is very early days with the new FW28 and to make predictions this early
was difficult.
Head said: "It's difficult when the car has not yet turned a wheel on a
track. Obviously you don't design a car saying 'I'm designing this car to
finish third', you design a car to win. But it's only when we get out
running that we will see exactly whether we have achieved in all areas what
we intended.
"But yes, I'm optimistic about the 2006 season."
Head added: "We don't think the Bridgestone tyres will be a limitation, we
don't think the Cosworth engine will be a limitation and therefore if we're
not right up there in among those manufacturers it will either be drivers or
the car.
"I think the drivers are pretty good so it's down to whether the car is
good...obviously our target is to be in front of all the manufacturers, but
we'll have to see." |
