Nico Rosberg Interview

WilliamsF1 driver Nico Rosberg answered a few questions at the recent launch of the WilliamsF1 FW28.

Nico RosbergQ: Do you feel ready for Bahrain?

I have got some kilometres underneath me now in testing, and that is going really well. And even though we have had some gearbox issues it is still going really well. I really feel at home now in the car.

I'm really confident in the car and it is important to have confidence. I am really looking forward to the first race.

You can always improve, especially probably on the technical side and the electronics and learning to make adjustments and think while you are driving. There are definitely things for me to work on but I am going in a good direction.

Q: How are you coping physically?

I think the V8 helps quite a lot in the physical part. I'm not sure whether it's because I have being doing a lot or whether it’s the V8 or probably a bit of both. Again Bahrain is going to be very different to conditions in Jerez.

They will be a lot more difficult with the heat conditions in Bahrain. So I need to work on that but I know from testing that I am totally fine in the car at the moment.

Q: How do you carry the weight of pressure being a Rosberg?

It has been a great help to me during my career. It has helped me find sponsors and the media is interested in me because of my name, also it’s been big even with F1 teams showing interest in me. It even goes that far.

"When I first drove the Williams back in 2002 it was because of my name so it has helped a lot. On the other hand it has been a bit of a burden in the fact that people always compare me to my father.

In every interview there is at least a quarter of it about my father. It does become a bit heavy so I try to see the positive side.

It's a great thing for me to have such a father especially since he can give me a lot of great advice. He is a very clever person and he has been through a lot so he can give me good advice.

Not in the car because you can't make someone go fast, you either have the talent or you don't, but outside the car the way I go about things like interviews he can give me a lot of great help.

Q: Did Keke try to talk you out of it?

No on the other hand I think he encouraged me because I can see at the moment it’s a fantastic thing for him to see that I have made it to F1.

He is happy and he really enjoys watching me even test. I can see it on his face how happy he is.

Q: How different is Formula 1 from other series you have raced in?

I think it is just a matter of getting used to things. The speed of the car, the amount of people that work here. We need to work on how to communicate with and encourage people.

There are over 600 that work here that you need to get on your side so they work harder for you which is a new thing for me. The thing that surprises me most is the amount of effort that the whole team puts in.

Even the engineers that work on the machines work overtime and things like that. That 600 people are so emotionally involved that they want to win. I think that is very special that after all these years they still fight right from the very top.

To hear Frank say that winning is like oxygen gives me goosebumps that he still feels that way.

Q: Does that not put pressure on you seeing the size of the operation?

Yes, but it is just another step up. Every year the cars are faster, there is more people and the interest is a lot bigger. So it's another step, a big step, but just another one.

Yes of course it is special but there is always pressure in racing because every year you are trying to prove yourself to the next step. So to a certain extent you are used to it by now.

Q: Some drivers choose smaller teams to make their F1 debuts to take pressure off themselves…

The fact that I am with a team that was not right at the very top last year can help me a bit coming in because the expectations are not quite as high, but obviously I hope that we can go up very quickly with our expectations.

Of course it is never easy but I like challenges and especially with Mark [Webber] as a team-mate who I see is very quick in testing also. I think people underestimate him a bit after last year but I look forward to working with him and going out to try and beat him.

Q: What are your expectations for this year?

I have a lot of belief in myself so I hope that I can have a great year. Honestly now I have to wait for the new car which comes out next week.

So I am going to have to wait for that and I am really looking forward to trying that because for a long time now I have been driving the old car. And then we can see where we are.

Q: Patrick Head says the team can win races, what do you think?

We really don't know where we are because the car has not even been on the track yet.

Q: Do you push from Bahrain onwards?

It is in my nature only to push but I tend to use my head a lot when I am racing. It will depend on the situation. I will try and get the results anyway.
