T
here is something special about the first away game of a new season. After two impressive victories at Sixways, the Champions now pack their bags and take their rugby onto the road, heading for the Richmond Athletic Ground — a venue that already holds a happy memory for Warriors supporters. It was only six months ago that Worcester made the same journey and returned home with a hard-earned 41–29 victory. Richmond pushed the Warriors all the way that afternoon, but tries from James Short, Lloyd Williams, Siva Naulago, Ashley Challenger, Josh Bassett and Tiff Eden eventually secured five valuable Championship points.
Much has changed since then. Worcester went on to lift the Championship trophy, while Richmond have begun this new campaign searching for their first victory. Their opening two matches have nevertheless shown that they cannot be taken lightly. They led Ampthill 40–21 before eventually losing a remarkable game 42–40, and then travelled to Ealing, where they scored three tries and remained competitive for long periods before going down 36–19.
The Warriors, meanwhile, have made the perfect start. Bedford were beaten 40–5 on the opening weekend, with Hallam Chapman claiming a hat-trick, before Rotherham arrived at Sixways and were swept aside 78–12 in a twelve-try performance. Siva Naulago also claimed a hat-trick, and the attacking rugby has already given supporters plenty to shout about. Eighteen tries and 118 points from the opening two games tell their own story, but Saturday will demand something different — the discipline, toughness and determination needed to win on the road.
Richmond will be desperate to put their first points on the board and, in front of their home supporters, they will believe this is their opportunity. The Warriors know that being Champions means every opponent will raise their game against them. There can be no complacency and no assumption that last season's success will make Saturday any easier. But this is a squad that has already learned how to handle pressure, fight through difficult periods and keep believing when a game becomes a battle. That character helped deliver the Championship last season, and now it needs to travel with them.
And that is where we, the supporters, come in. The Fortress may be back in Worcester for another week, but the Fortress is not just a stadium — it is the people who stand behind this club. On Saturday we take our colours, our voices and our passion to Richmond. We have watched this club rise again, we have celebrated the Championship triumph, and now we get to follow the Champions as they begin the defence of their title. There is nothing quite like the first away day, and there is every reason to make this one a memorable one.
Saturday should be an intriguing contest between a Richmond side with plenty to prove and a Warriors team riding the confidence of two emphatic victories. Worcester will look to bring the same attacking ambition that has produced 118 points in the opening two games, but away from home the emphasis will also be on control, patience and winning the key battles up front. Richmond have shown they can score heavily and punish lapses, so the Warriors will need to start with intensity, impose their game and stay composed when the pressure comes. If they can do that, the Champions have every opportunity to make their first journey of the season a successful one.
The Call To Arms
So let's get behind the boys from the first whistle. Let Richmond know that Worcester Warriors have arrived, let our players hear us when the going gets tough, and let them know that the Warriors faithful are right there with them. We have started this season with a roar at Sixways; now it is time to take that roar on the road.
The Champions are travelling. The Warriors are united. And the first away day awaits.
Loud, proud and passionate — wherever we play, we are Warriors.
COME ON YOU WARRIORS!!!
