Martin’s comments come after the team lost valuable points at both the French and British Grand Prix, as main rivals Ferrari had heavily improved the F2007, which bet the MP4-22 at both events. Despite the McLaren team achieving the same amount of points as the Ferrari team, McLaren CEO Martin Witmarsh believes the team need to do more in order to win, next weekends German grand prix.
The German grand prix -which will be McLaren’s engine partners, Mercedes’ home grand prix- will be wanting to secure a 1-2 victory if possible at the Nurburgring. If the team are to do this, they will need to bring a faster car to the German event, and overall raise their performance bar by 0.2 seconds a lap.
"Whilst we left Silverstone satisfied with the points Fernando and Lewis took from the race, the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team exists to win. The team is approaching the race at the Nurburgring looking to win; the motivation is there, as is the performance with Fernando, Lewis, the MP4-22 and the team". He said
"We had a constructive test in Belgium, as I am sure have the other teams, and we now need to translate that onto the race track. We have to raise the bar internally with regards our performance and continue to ensure that if the win doesn't happen, then we take the maximum points total possible."
