Now with three British Superbike titles, the likeable John Reynolds remains probably the most focused and determined competitor in the series, even against riders more than ten years his junior. An experienced campaigner on the wider stage, he won at Brands Hatch as a World Superbike wildcard in 2000. ‘JR’ has the distinction of securing titles on three different makes of bike and, with 37 BSB victories from the past eight seasons, shows no signs of letting up. He goes into 2005 fully intending to defend his latest crown

Made racing début, starting with a classic Velocette; first win at Cadwell Park

8th in British 600cc Senior Stock championship, with Kawasaki and Honda - 2nd and fastest lap at Thruxton; British 350cc Star Champion, with Yamaha - won Carnaby; 9th in British Junior championship, with 350cc Yamaha - 2nd Mallory Park; 9th in Honda CBR Challenge - 3rd Snetterton and Mallory

9th in British Supersport 600 championship - 4th Donington Park; 4th in Supersport 600 Supercup - won Brands Hatch; 2nd in British Supersport 400 championship - four wins, two fastest laps; raced the Isle of Man TT, with a best result of ninth in the 400cc Supersport class - all on Kawasakis

6th in British 750cc TT F1 Supercup - won Donington; British Supersport 600 Supercup Champion - won Snetterton; - both on Kawasakis

1991 Team Green, number 6 Kawasaki
Finished third in the British 750cc TT F1 Supercup, scoring 122 points with five third places and three fourths, and two fastest laps. Also raced the ZXR750R in the TT Superbike series, and scored a tenth at Donington Park as a World Superbike wildcard

1992 Team Green, number 3 Kawasaki
A brilliant year, in which he won both the British 750cc Supercup and the TT Superbike series, with multiple race wins including non-championship races, and at least seven fastest laps - earning £1000 for the first 100mph lap average, at Mallory Park. Also scored as a World Superbike wildcard, with a best of eighth place twice

1993 Padgett’s Motorcycles, number 28 Harris Yamaha
Following success at home, JR graduated to the 500cc Grands Prix privateer ranks in 1993, scoring 42 points for fifteenth overall. He got into the top fifteen on eight occasions, with a best result of ninth place at three different venues
Also raced a Honda VFR750R at the Suzuka 8 Hours, finishing 19th with Bruno Bonhuil

1994 Padgett’s Motorcycles, number 15 Harris Yamaha
Reynolds continued in the 500 class for a second season, scoring one more point and going up a place to fourteenth. Nine scoring results included tenth place on four occasions

1995 Revé Racing Company, number 33 Kawasaki
The Revé team was set up by Ben Atkins to run John in World Superbikes, and he achieved tenth place in the series, with 155 points. His results on the ZXR750 included nine in the top eight, with a fourth and third at Brands Hatch, and a sixth and third at Assen, and he was a front row starter four times
Also raced at the first British Superbike meeting, scoring a second and a third in the two Donington races

1996 Team Suzuki World Superbike, number 10 Suzuki
For 1996, John switched to the GSX-R750 in the new Suzuki team, but the bike was tricky to handle at high speeds. It was race seven before he got a point on the board, but after that he managed a handful of top nine finishes, with a best of fifth at Brno. 99 points put him twelfth overall
Also raced at the Suzuka 8 Hours, finishing tenth with Kirk McCarthy

1997 Rêve Red Bull Ducati, number 33 Ducati
Returning to the revitalised British Superbike championship, Reynolds was immediately a front runner on the Ducati 916. With two pole positions and six fastest laps, he had eleven top five finishes, including two wins. But injuries ruled him out of six races, and a final tally of 227 points was only good for fourth position
Also raced as a World Superbike wildcard, with three scoring results and a best of seventh

1998 Rêve Red Bull Ducati Team, number 4 Ducati
1998 started disappointingly, as an early foot injury hampered John’s progress. His first top six result came in race ten, but he followed on with ten results of fifth or better, and won at Brands Hatch. Scoring 252 points he was again fourth overall, also taking three fastest laps
Also raced as a World Superbike wildcard at Brands Hatch, picking up two points on bike 49 in race two

1999 Rêve Red Bull Ducati Team, number 4 Ducati
Things looked up in 1999, as John got involved in a three-way BSB title battle with Troy Bayliss and Chris Walker. A consistent season meant twenty top six finishes, and all but five of these saw him on the podium. As well as a pole position and six fastest laps on the 996, wins came at six different circuits. However, four no-scores cost him a chance of the crown, and one of these resulted from a collision with Walker in the final race, when Reynolds was still an outside prospect for success. He ended up third, with 357 points - just nine behind second man Walker
Also raced as a World Superbike wildcard in British races, on bike 46, with an eighth, two sevenths, and a fourth to his name

2000 Rêve Red Bull Ducati Team, number 3 Ducati
2000 saw a titanic struggle for supremacy between Neil Hodgson and Chris Walker, with John always a threat after leading the points table through the first three rounds. Indeed, he scored points in all 24 races, never outside the top five, with four wins and three seconds overall. The other two won more often, though, so with one pole position, six fastest laps and 405 points, John ended up a close third
Also raced as a World Superbike wildcard at four meetings, with bike number 47. He retired four times, but also took a tenth, two fourths and an impressive win at Brands Hatch, after leading virtually the whole race; also took part in a Ford Fiesta race - qualified seventh and finished eleventh, after being punted off

2001 Rêve Red Bull Ducati Team, number 3 Ducati
The 2001 title chase quickly developed into a two horse race, with Reynolds and Steve Hislop winning all but two races between them. John, with occasional help from team-mate Sean Emmett, scored twelve wins, nine seconds, five poles and eleven fastest laps. Sadly, the title was decided when JR, with a foot injury, missed a gear at Rockingham’s penultimate round. He was clipped by the closely following Hizzy, who crashed into the barrier and was injured, missing the last three races. Reynolds scored 536 points from 25 finishes, for his second British Superbike title

2002 Rizla Suzuki/Crescent, number 1 Suzuki
The Crescent Suzuki team were one of the first to switch up to a 1000cc four-cylinder machine under new regulations, with Reynolds hired to lead development. Ducati’s twin remained the bike to beat, with Hislop, Emmett and Michael Rutter the top men, but John took a third, five seconds and a win at Brands Hatch. He also achieved one pole and two fastest laps and, with other top eight results, was in sixth overall on 284 points

2003 Rizla Suzuki, number 6 Suzuki
2003 should have seen Reynolds go head-to-head against Ducati’s Shane Byrne, but injury at Silverstone meant he missed the first two races. Byrne looked uncatchable after the first seven rounds, although by then JR had secured seven rostrum results, including a win at Brands. The points disadvantage was too severe, but still John out-scored Shakey in the last five meetings, adding another three wins. This left him a creditable second overall, with 358 points, plus two poles and seven fastest laps
Also raced as a World Superbike wildcard, carrying number 61, scoring two tenths, a sixth and second place, plus fastest lap, at Brands Hatch

2004 Rizla Suzuki, number 2 Suzuki
The year started much more positively, with John on the podium in each of the first eleven races. An injury in race twelve was not enough to rob him of momentum and, apart from a low point at Cadwell Park, he kept on racking up points. Having scored seven wins already, third and sixth at the final round were comfortably enough to deny Michael Rutter and Honda the title. 446 points was 29 clear of his rival, and John also took two poles and seven fastest laps
