Early morning mist was lingering over the Indianapolis circuit as the first of Saturday’s two practice sessions got underway. Rubens Barrichello will be out to make up for his lot track time yesterday and he and Michael Schumacher were both out early to complete their installation lap to ensure all was okay with the car. Barrichello has basically a new chassis today and the one he crashed yesterday has been repaired and no becomes the spare car. Ferrari are still not 100% certain as to the reason for his crash but Ross Brawn does not feel the loss of time will hurt Rubens too much.

Barrichello’s opening runs sees him swap fastest laps with the Williams drivers and then with the McLaren of Coulthard. But it was left to Michael Schumacher to show the true pace as he puts in a new fastest lap of the weekend with a 1.11.262 already he is faster than last years qualifying time and is over 1 second ahead of second places Coulthard. Barrichello’s second run of the day has him moving up to second with a 1.11.743. Schumacher is also back out and he is running much larger brake ducts than Barrichello suggesting that he has plenty of fuel on board at this stage.

The closing minutes of the session would see no dramatic changes to the times at the top although the rivals of Ferrari did begin to close in a little on the gap and got it down to less than 1 second.
