It was a slow start to the session for Ferrari and it was almost 30 minutes before both Schumacher and Barrichello took to the track. Montoya has put up the initial pole position lap with a 1.11.414 but now we see what sort of pace the F2002 has. Rubens moves into second place with a lap of 1.11.592 but he made small error that cost him some time. Michael aborted his run and returned to the pits with no time on the board.
Michael’s second run is much better and he moves into provisional pole with a lap of 1.10.790 this comes despite having to back off for yellow flags for Yoong’s stranded Minardi. Barrichello emerges from his garage for his next run just as Michael pits and he will be keen to make a good improvement on his third place. And improve he does with a 1.11.058 to go into second place behind Michael and make the front row all red for the time being.
10 minutes to go and Montoya is mowing the grass down at turn 1 as Schumacher once again takes to the track and Barrichello also is out on track but is not making any improvement on his earlier time. No improvement for Michael either as it seems the track conditions have taken a turn for the worse. It looks unlikely that anyone other than Barrichello will pose his earlier lap a problem though so he might save a set of tyres for the race tomorrow and sit out the closing stages of the session.
Schumacher and Barrichello are however back out on track as the clock ticks down the Ferrari’s trundles back down the pit lane to in their final attempts for the day. But neither driver makes any further improvements and they had to settle for what they previously had. David Coulthard pops into third place as the session comes to an end to demote Montoya down to fourth.
So a great session for Ferrari and a predictable pole for Michael Schumacher who has looked in dominating form from the first free practice. Barrichello is also on a strong weekend even with his lost time on Friday he is in good shape for the race. Securing the front row is all Ferrari would have wanted from today and they got it. It looks like another easy win for Ferrari in the race tomorrow.
