It has been the perfect season for Michael Schumacher and he is truly lost for words when it come to talking about the way it has went. Schumacher ended the 2002 season with the way he started it by winning. In a remarkable season the lowest he has finished was third place and he has now not retired from a race since the German GP in 2001. After taking pole position on Saturday the scene was set for another Schumacher win and after he was away well from the grid he never looked back as he went on to claim the chequered flag. Schumacher praised his team and their partners for this win as well as the season overall.

“It’s hard to find the words to describe this season, but the results speak for themselves," beamed a delighted Schumacher. "Finishing all the races on the podium shows the quality of the work done by all the team. What they have achieved is unbelievable. I think today’s race was great for the Japanese fans as they saw two winners; me and Sato getting his first F1 points in his home event. As for the race, I got a good start, built a gap and that meant the pit stops could be planned at just the right time. All weekend we were quick so I was not surprised at the gap. I want to thank Bridgestone for a superb tyre, which worked very well even though we had never done a long run with it in these hot conditions. I am very happy for them that they have taken their 70th win in their 100th GP and in their home event."

Ross Brawn was at home this weekend due to back problems and although the team never missed him that much on a technical level, they still missed him around the place. Schumacher wished Brawn all the best as he watched the race at home in England and wished him a speedy recovery. "I also want to mention Ross who missed a race for the first time. Get well soon!"

2002 is over and Michael is already casting one eye to the 2003 season when he will hope for more of the same, but over the course of the winter a lot can change and although Ferrari will be improving Michael is only too well aware that those behind can make big leaps. However the 2003 season is a long time away and he is more looking forward to some free time over the winter as well as attending the Ferrari party at Misano next week. As well as the traditional end of season party that will go long into the evening tonight.

"Now, I plan to have a nice winter and come back stronger next year. But I expect next season to be tougher as the other teams get closer. That will be a challenge. I still think we will be in the fight for the titles and winning races but maybe we will not win races so consistently. But we don’t need to be as dominant as long as we still win. The Ferrari event in Misano next week will be a big celebration, but first we have tonight!”
