In the past, the Monaco Grand Prix always used to start late in the afternoon – the legend said that the Royal Family here liked to finish their lunch before watching the race! These days, to fit in with television schedules, it starts, like the majority of European grands prix at 2 o’clock. However, the mechanics all have to get to work a bit earlier than usual, to deal with the logistical problems of the paddock to pit layout.

This morning’s warm-up will have a busy schedule for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, as instead of just one spare car, the team has brought two to the Principality, which is a reflection of how easy it is to damage machinery against the barriers. This means that both Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello will be checking out their spare cars for the first time this weekend. They will also practice hitting exactly the right spot for the race’s pit stops. With the pit lane being so narrow and over-crowded during the two days of practice, it is never possible to go through this procedure as often as at other tracks. But at least, because it is the World Champion team, the Scuderia has the small advantage of being the first garage after the pit lane entrance.

As for the weather, there are a few more clouds in the sky than yesterday, but it is not expected to rain during this afternoon’s seventh round of the world championship.
