So its halfway through the 2002 Formula One season, so how is the class of team shaping up and how do they compare to their 2001 performance? Well here is my half-term report and its not nice reading for our rivals!

Points difference from 2001 +4
Williams – This was supposed to be the year Williams came to the front but once again their hopes and dreams have been let down by another poor chassis and another unreliable BMW engine. Juan Montoya is still the biggest overhyped driver in F1 and still has only won 1 race. Ralf has once again slipped into his mid-season mediocrity and they are now looking over their shoulders at McLaren who they have benefited from this season.
Points difference from 2001 +26
McLaren – After their slipping away in 2001 nobody really expected a strong McLaren in 2002. And they have not disappointed as they are no where near strong enough to challenge Ferrari. With a rookie and Coulthard they are not going forwards very fast and have found themselves to be on the grass more than on the track. Still a win for Coulthard in Monaco is as much as Williams have managed so things might be on the up for the grey team.
Points difference from 2001 -17
BAR – After the sacking of Pollock many thought this would be the start of a BAR charge up the grid, but it has failed to happen and the main reason for this has to be put at the footstep of Jacques Villeneuve who is more worried about MS than his own lack of performance. Panis has once again been the shining light for BAR and it must pain him to see the team work so much for Jacques when he has no talent to deliver.
Points difference from 2001 -12
Jaguar – Despite his best efforts Nikki Lauda is unable to bring any results from the big cat and you have to question their decision to have Eddie Irvine as lead driver, Eddie is not known for his development work as he showed at Ferrari and this must be the biggest reason for them not making any progress. Ford must be considering pulling the plug on this massive PR failure.
Points difference from 2001 -2
Sauber – Sauber have been a little disappointing this season after their brilliant form in 2001 many had tipped them to really come to the front. But this season has not seen the same performance despite still having the Ferrari power they have failed to really improve from last season, the loss of Raikkonen to McLaren must have hurt them a little but Heidfeld and Massa are better than what they have shown so far. Things should improve for them in the second halve of the season.
Points difference from 2001 -7
Minardi – Are Minardi still in F1? Well yes by name not really by nature, Paul Stoddart has really killed the great Minardi history and has spent the most of the season bleating on about money he feels his team should get from the Prost collapse. Hiring Alex Yoong for money is a step too far for many F1 fans and a lot of respect has been lost for Minardi. Mark Webber has shown promise though and hopefully we can see him in a better team for 2003.
Points difference from 2001 +2
Toyota – So far so good from the new Toyota outfit, with the steady Mika Salo the team have done very well considering their newness to the sport. With a big budget and a massive workforce Toyota are not to be taken lightly, but they will have to drop McNish if they are to move towards the front before long.
Points difference from 2001 NA
Renault – Great showing from Renault in what could be classed as their debut year but more likely their second in F1. The early problems with their engine are now gone and they have a very quick car that should develop well for the remainder of the season and they are looking a big threat to Ferrari for the near future. With Trulli and Button they have quite a strong driver line-up and Briatore will accept no less than success.
Points difference from 2001 +11
Arrows – Arrows are one of those teams that are never going to improve themselves while they are only in the sport to make money for their owner. The sacking of Verstappen highlighted this teams desire to fleece as much of the green stuff from the sport that they can. Frentzen is the star of this poor outfit and it’s a shame his talents are wasted on such a terrible car and team, Bernoldi is another driver only employed for money and should not be on the grid.
Points difference from 2001 +1
Jordan – It’s a shame that Jordan has to also employ a below standard driver in the shape of Sato, he is hired to in the hope that Honda will favour them more over BAR but it is not going to work while Sato crashes and wrecks chassis after chassis. It is also a shame that Fisichella has to be present at Jordan this season, he is doing a great job but his talents are way too worthy for the ambitions of this team these days.
