“I am happy that Brazil will play Turkey,” said Barrichello. “We know more about their team and for them it will be a chance to seek revenge for their 2:1 defeat in the first round.” Asked specifically about the tournament, Barrichello insisted that his interest in the soccer was not a distraction. “It is an enjoyable event which only takes place once every four years. But when we have work to do at Ferrari, the television is switched off and we concentrate completely on Formula 1.”

Asked about the changes to the first part of the track, Rubens feels it is safer than before, but does little to improve the chances of overtaking. “It’s a first gear corner,” said the Brazilian. “We saw the F3000 race today with cars colliding together. It could be dangerous but I don’t think it will be. Actually, I think the second turn is worse, because everyone will try to be on the inside. It is narrow with a wide exit and so there are several lines you can take. The first corner, along with the chicane, is an overtaking opportunity, but passing is never easy at this track.”

Talk of overtaking inevitably leads on to the subject of strategy. “Two stops is pretty much the only way to go, especially because of the difficulty in overtaking,” explained Rubens. “We will make a decision after tomorrow’s warm-up. I think we will be stronger in race trim than the opposition but a lot will depend on the ability to get past other cars. It will be vital to time the pit stops well, deciding when to come in or when it is best to stay out. That will be the key.”

As to the new pit lane exit, Rubens feels it’s not too bad. “It depends whether or not you are dicing with someone,” he said. “Before you came out too much onto the racing line, but now you are on the line but you have to make the turn and anyone on the outside has a bit more room.”
