After strong showing in all the practice session in dry and in the wet Ferrari were confident that they could secure a strong position on the grid for tomorrow’s race. Qualifying would see clear skies with no real threat of rain, but the Ferrari team were quick to take to the track just to cover themselves in case of a sudden shower. Michael Schumacher was first to go and he put the F2002 straight away into provisional pole position. Schumacher putting in an early banker but for Rubens Barrichello his first run was aborted.

Barrichello was soon back out and he moved into second place behind Michael but he was very much faster than the German in the final sector. And it was this pace that was to move Barrichello into provisional pole late in the session as he just manages to beat Schumacher’s time and set the German a new challenge to beat. Barrichello lap of 1.19.032 is just enough to keep Schumacher behind for the moment with the best from Michael being 1.19.042. Behind Ferrari the Williams duo are trying their best to get close and Ralf is leading their charge but is some 3 hundredths of the Ferrari pace.

3 minutes to go and Schumacher is back out as is Montoya for what would will be their last chance to improve on their times. Schumacher has made some small changes to the set-up of his Ferrari, the rear wind and front wing getting most of the attention. Rubens is also back out on track looking to defend his pole position, but the traffic may well hamper any attempts at a faster lap.

And in a dramatic finale to the session Juan Pablo Montoya snatches the pole position from the Ferrari’s having to settle for second and third. Schumacher was on a faster lap than Montoya but a small error in the final sector ended his hopes of pole position. So once again the qualifying performance of the Ferrari’s and Bridgestones is not up to that of the Michelin shod Williams, but as Ferrari have proved in the last 3 races a Montoya pole is nothing to worry about. The team are in a great position for the race.
