In between today’s two practice sessions McLaren announced their 2003 driver line-up and along with that came the news that Mika Hakkinen will not be returning to the sport after his years sabbatical. Mika who won 2 world championships was one of Michael Schumacher’s greatest rivals on track. Schumacher and Hakkinen had many great battle on the racing circuits around the world, most notably in 98 and 2000. Schumacher warmed to Mika who went about his racing like a gentleman and the two became not so much good friends, but a lot of respect was shown to each other.
So the news that he is not to return is finally confirmed, and Michael was not really surprised by this decision by the Finn. “It’s a real shame,” said Michael. “I always enjoyed my fights with him, but to be honest, I would have been more surprised if he had decided to come back. Mika has decided to enjoy life for now and who can blame him.”
