The 2007 Spanish GP would see AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg finish in a fantastic sixth position. Nico was always looking to finish in the points and with several retirements was able to secure the points scoring finish. Alex Wurz was to be involved in an accident that would see his front suspension damaged and he would retire. A very positive result for the team afer a difficult weekend.

 Spanish GP Race Review

With Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz lining up in eleventh and eighteenth grid positions the 2007 Spanish Grand Prix would be a difficult time for the AT&T Williams team. On pole was Massa followed by Alonso, Raikkonen, and Hamilton. Conditions were dry and sunny for the sixty six lap race. It will be very interesting to see what strategy Nico and Alex would run, let alone the rest of the grid. The grid would move away for their parade lap with most drivers on the
softer option tyre, including the Williams.

RosbergThe grid would take up their positions but Trulli would stall and the race start was aborted. The cars would have to make a second parade lap. Trulli would be pushed off the grid. He will have to start from the pit lane having been told that he has a fuel pressure issue and would have to keep the revs high to get away. The grid would line up and the race was underway with Massa leading Alonso into Turn one. But Massa would touch the McLaren of Alonso dropping to fourth. Massa was leading with Hamilton second and Raikkonen third.

Alex would see his race come to an end with damaged front suspension. Alex would pit his car and retire. Ralf would pit to get on a new nose. At the front Massa was still leading while Alonso was trying to pass Kimi. After lap two Massa was 2.1 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Massa was setting a quick pace setting fastest laps. Lap three it was a 1m:23.561. Fifth and sixth were Kubica and Heidfeld. Nico was now in ninth 1.6 seconds behind Kovalainen. Lap four and a new fastest lap, 1m:23.017. Replays showed that Alex simply had no where to go and ran into the back of Ralf's car. Lap five and Nico was some 15 seconds behind the leaders.

lap six and another fastest lap from Massa, 1m:23.016. Hamilton was now 4.5 seconds behind the Ferrari. On lap eight Webber would be told to stop his car which he did in the pit. He had hydraulic failure. Lap eight and another fastest lap fro Massa, 1m:22.978. He was now 5.6 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Kimi was closing onto the rear of the second placed McLaren. Alonso was still fourth. But on lap ten Kimi would slow his car with a problem. He would make it to his pit and retire. Trulli had also retired in his pit. Lap eleven and Sped would suffer a rear tyre failure on the main straight. He would pull off at Turn one and retire.

WurzMassa was now leading but we now had the two McLaren's in second and third. Nico was now in eighth. Nico was 5.2 seconds behind Kovalainen. He was losing time to the Renault. Another fastest lap for Massa on lap twelve, 1m:22.710. Alonso's speed had improved since losing Kimi but he was still over four seconds behind Hamilton. Massa was still pulling away with another fastest lap on lap fourteen, 1m:22.680. Nico was now 7.0 seconds behind Kovalainen. Who would
stop first was the big question.

After sixteen laps Massa's lead was 9.0 seconds. The top eight places were all spread apart with none really challenging for any places. The McLaren's were running a similar pace while Coulthard was in sixth. A personal best for Nico on lap seventeen, 1m:24.408. He would improve this the next lap, 1m:24.233. Barrichello would pit from ninth on lap nineteen. Lap twenty and Massa would pit. Alonso would also pit, joined by Kovalainen. Massa would have a fuel fire on
the side of his car as he pulled away. Lap twenty one and Coulthard would pit from fifth. He would lose time having to pass a slowing Liuzzi coming down the pit lane.

Lap twenty two and Kubica would pit from second. Nico was in fifth. Liuzzi would retire in the pits. Hamilton would now be leading but would pit on lap twenty three. Nico was now in fourth. The front runners would take on the softer option tyre leaving the harder one for the final stint. Lap twenty four and Nico would pit from fourth. Heidfeld was now leading with Massa second. The BMW driver would pit the next lap. Massa was now leading Hamilton by 8.3 seconds
with Alonso 10.4 seconds behind his team-mate. Heidfeld's pit stop would go wrong with a wheel nut coming adrift on his right front tyre.

Replays showed that Heidfeld was told to leave his pit too early. He would return to his pit and take on new tyres. Nico was now seventh. With twenty seven laps run the order was Massa from Hamilton, Alonso, Kubica, Coulthard, Kovalainen, Nico and in eighth Davidson. Lap twenty nine and Davidson would pit. Nico was having a fairly lonely race been over twelve seconds behind Kovalainen and a similar time ahead of Barrichello. Lap thirty one and Kovalainen would pit. Fourth placed Kubica was 2.3 seconds behind Alonso. At the front Massa was comfortably leading from Hamilton.

Nico was now in sixth. Albers would take a drive through penalty. Alonso was on the harder tyre which was costing him time. Kovalainen closed in onto Nico. Nico was told to push and ask by his engineer to think of what front wing he wanted on his car for the new tyres that he would take on at his next pit stop. Lap forty two and Massa was now 19.3 seconds ahead of Hamilton. The next lap and both Barrichello and Massa would pit. Coulthard and Kovalainen would pit. Nico would pit from fifth on lap forty four. He was on the harder tyres for his final stint. Lap forty eight and Hamilton and Kubica would pit.

The next lap and Alonso would pit for the final time as Heidfeld pulled into his pit to retire as a result of the problem with his wheel nut. Alonso was on the softer tyre. Nico was running in sixth with Kovalainen 2.5 seconds behind the Williams driver. There was little happening for the top eight drivers after fifty six laps of the race. Massa was still leading from Hamilton, Alonso, Kubica, Coulthard, Nico, Kovalainen, and Fisichella. Hamilton was 10.4 seconds behind Massa after lap fifty seven. Fisichella was going to have to take on a small amount of fuel to
finish the race. This would allow Sato to move into eighth.

Fisichella would pit on lap sixty. Nico would set his personal best time with a 1m:23.784. Strange that it was so late in the race, but he would be light on fuel. Sato was now in eighth. Massa was comfortably leading the race as Nico was now just 6.8 seconds behind Coulthard, with Coulthard putting in some slow times. Nico continued to close on the Red Bull. reports had Coulthard struggling with a gearbox problem. It was now down to 2.9 seconds with only a handful of laps left.

Massa would start his final lap with Hamilton 7.6 seconds behind. He would complete the lap to take victory. Hamilton would come home second and take the lead in the Drivers Championship. Alonso was third followed by Kubica. Coulthard was able to survive and come home fifth with Nico in a fantastic sixth. Kovalainen was in seventh followed by Sato. The Japanese driver would get the teams first championship point.
