AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg would finish fifth in a very wet opening Friday practice at the Monza circuit. Team-mate Kazuki Nakajima would not set a time in the session after having gone off at one of the chicanes and into the gravel. He would return to his pit but take no further part. With the rain falling the conditions got worse seeing several drivers not set time, including Kazuki..

 Italian GP Friday 1st Practice

With the AT&T Williams team moving to the Monza circuit for the 2008 Italian Grand Prix, the team was hopeful of securing an improved result especially after some recent good performances in testing at Monza. The opening hour and a half Friday practice would get underway with the track damp, having been
declared wet. It would be the normal flood of drivers taking to the track to complete their installation lap. Both Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima would come out with Kazuki making a small mistake at one of the chicanes in the damp conditions. He would cut the chicane and continue.

NakajimaWith ten minutes of the session run only the Ferrari's had yet to come out. No times had been set yet as both Force India cars returned to the circuit. The conditions weer tricky as Fisichella cut the second chicane. Fisichella would set a time of 1m:37.549 but Sutil would go quicker with a 1m:37.402. A dry line could be seen in places. Fisichella would improve with a 1m:35.779. Sutil would pit. Fisichella would pit the next lap while Barrichello came out. He would set a time of 1m:34.374 to go fastest. We still had yet to see either Ferrari leave the pit lane. The BMW team was telling Heidfeld that it would start raining in five to ten minutes and would last for fifteen minutes.

Rubens would improve with a 1m:33.428 as both Force India cars returned to the track. Sutil would move into second with a 1m:33.481. Both Vettel and Bourdais were out on the track. Barrichello had pitted. Kazuki would take to the track also as Sutil pitted. Nico would join his team-mate out on the track. Kazuki would go off the track taking to the gravel at the second chicane. He was able to get going as Vettel also took to the gravel at Ascari in the difficult conditions. Bourdais was fourth, 1m:43.206, followed by Vettel, 1m:49.150. Both Vettel and Nakajima appeared to be on dry tyres. Both Torro Rosso cars had pitted. Fisichella had improved with a 1m:33.695. Nico was also back in his pit.

Kazuki's run through the gravel would see his car leaving the ground as it dug into the gravel. Sutil was now fastest with a 1m:32.842. Only the Force India cars were on the circuit as the rain returned. Sutil would take to the gravel at Ascari but was able to keep going a pit at the end of the lap. There was just under a hour remaining in the session. Everyone had pitted as the rain continued to fall. Button was back out with spray coming off his tyres. He would pit as Bourdais also came out to try the wet conditions. Button ran the intermediate tyre while Bourdais was on the full wet. Trulli was next out followed by team-mate Glock. Bourdais would cut the first chicane as he failed to stop his car in time to make the turn. Both Honda's were also out on the track.

Trulli was now fifth with a 1m:43.561, behind Bourdais, 1m:39.276. Glock was now fifth with a 1m:39.873 while Trulli had improved with a 1m:40.063. Button was seventh with a 1m:40.236. Both Glock and Trulli would improve with Glock a time of 1m:38.367 and Trulli a 1m:38.722. Bourdais had also improved with a 1m:37.658. Nico would come out on full wets looking to try the conditions. The FW30 was running the new front wing. With thirty six minutes left the order was Sutil followed by Barrichello, Fisichella, Bourdais, Glock, Trulli, Button, and Vettel. Piquet and Alonso were also out on the track. Nico's first timed lap was a 1,:41.104 which saw him in eighth. Alonso, 1m:42.342, and Piquet, 1m:47.607 were in ninth and tenth. Piquet would spin at the first chicane but was able to continue. Alonso was now seventh with a 1m:38.894. Nico had improved with a 1m:39.011.

Raikkonen would be the first Ferrari to take to the track with just over half and hour remaining. Vettel was back out along with both Force India cars. Nico had improved to now be in fourth with a 1m:36.900. Raikkonen was down in eighth, 1m:37.392. Massa was also out on the track and was down in thirteenth with a 1m:40.233. Nico had pitted. Alonso was now fifth, 1m:36.965, followed by Bourdais and Trulli. The conditions were extremely difficult with the track fully wet and very overcast. Glock would move into fourth with a 1m:36.800, pushing Nico down to fifth. Kazuki was still in his pit having yet to set a time.

Neither of the BMW's or McLaren's had yet to set a time. Only a handful of drivers were out in the difficult conditions. Massa was still slowest as the heavy rain continued to fall. With fifteen minutes left the track was empty. Such were the conditions it would not be surprising to see no one further come out in the rest of the session. The rain was so heavy that it would be dangerous to attempt to drive . Parts of the pit lane were being flooded as the drains could not cope with the amount of water.

The session would be red flagged due to the conditions, so with the end of the session the order was Sutil followed by Barrichello, and Fisichella. These three had set a time on the drier track. Those following had set wet track times. Glock was fourth followed by Nico, Alonso, Bourdais, Trulli, Raikkonen, Vettel, Piquet, Coulthard, Button, and Massa. As for the Williams team the decision to send out Nakajima on dry tyres was most the best given the end result with Kazuki spinning off into the gravel. Little can be drawn from Nico's fifth place given the conditions.
