Nico Rosberg

For the Williams team the 2009 Australian GP would see the team secure two points after Nico Rosberg finished in seventh. It was such a frustrating race for the team. Nico and Kazuki would run near the front in the early stages. But it all went wrong with Kazuki crashing and them Nico getting involved with several problems. Still a point scoring result is a good way to start the year.

 Australian GP Race Review

Saturday would see Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima qualifying for the 2009 Australian Grand Prix fifth and thirteen but the later disqualification of both Toyota's for for a flexible wing infringement would see Kazuki start from eleventh. The other big news was that Hamilton would also start at the back of the grid for the start of the race. It was later confirmed that both Toyota's would start from the pit lane after having to take them out of parc ferme to make changes due to their rear wings.

RosbergAnother aspect of the race that will be new is KERS. Those teams running KERS were McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, and the BMW Sauber of Heidfeld. How this will effect aspects of the race like the start is an unknown. There is also the question as to Whether the late start of the race will cause any problems with the sun being low in the sky.

The grid would be cleared and the cars would move away on the parade lap for the fifty eight lap race. Both Brawn cars were on the harder tyre along with Nico and Kazuki. The Ferrari's and the BMW of Kubica were on the softer tyre. They would form up on the grid and the lights would come on and then go off.

The start would see Button leading with Nico third. Barrichello made a poor start and was down in seventh. Nico would get passed by Massa, Kubica, and Raikkonen to now be in sixth. The Ferrari's were able to use thei9r KERS to get up to the front. Lap one and Button was leading by 3.9 seconds. Kazuki was up to eighth from eleventh. Heidfeld would pit with a puncture and the Force India would come in with a missing front wing. Webber would also pit for a new front wing. This came as a result of Barrichello hitting Webber at Turn one. Webber would hit Heidfeld. Kovalainen was also in only to retire.

NakajimaA fastest lap from Button on lap two. Vettel was fastest on lap three, 1m:29.752. Button's lead was now 4.4 seconds. Nico was still sixth with Kazuki 3.5 seconds behind Barrichello. Vettel fastest on lap four, 1m:28.999, Nico was 10.2 seconds behind the leader. Lap five and Button was again faster, 1m:28.787. Kazuki was dropping away from seventh placed Barrichello. Despite using the softer tyres the Ferrari's were dropping away from Button. Lap six and a fastest lap from Vettel, 1m:28.424.

Hamilton was up to ninth after having used KERS to pass Piquet. Nico was right behind Raikkonen as Button completed lap seven. Vettel was again fastest with a 1m:28.235. Kovalainen would confirm that he had hit Webber as he could not avoid him in the first corner accidents. Kazuki was having a lonely run in eighth. Nico was going defensive as he was told to get by Raikkonen as there is a chance of a podium. Nico would pass Raikkonen at Turn one. Great piece of driving. Raikkonen would pit on lap eleven as Nico was now right behind Kubica and Massa.

RosbergTrulli had also pitted. Massa would also pit on lap twelve joined by Hamilton. Button was still leading by 4.8 seconds from Vettel, Kubica, Nico, Barrichello, Kazuki, Piquet, and Buemi. Lap thirteen Kubica would also pit. Nico was now in third twenty seven seconds behind Vettel. Nico really suffered by being stuck behind those drivers running on the super soft tyres. Lap thirteen and a personal best from Nico, 1m:28.519. Barrichello was dropping back from Nico with a damaged front wing.

Nico would improve the next lap with a 1m:28.428. Lap fifteen and the order was Button from Vettel, Nico, Barrichello, Kazuki, Piquet, Buemi, and Fisichella. Nico was certainly on the leaders pace. Lap seventeen and Vettel would pit joined by Nico. Nico remained on the harder tyres taking on a lot of fuel for what would be a long middle stint. There would be a problem with the left front that would cost him time. Lap seventeen and Button was pushing with a fastest lap of 1m:28.020. Kazuki was now fourth and Nico down in thirteenth.

It would all go wrong for Kazuki when he crashed between Turn three and four. Kazuki ran wide and hit the kerb and the car went into a spin and turned left into the barriers. He would take off his front wing. While this was happening Buemi, Barrichello, and Glock would pit. Button was next on lap twenty. With the debris on the track from Kazuki's accident the Safety Car was deployed. Piquet, Alonso, and Fisichella would pit. Nico was now in seventh. Fisichella would miss his pit and have to back up.

NakajimaThe Safety Car would pick up the leader as the field came together. lap twenty one and the order was Button from Vettel, Massa, Kubica, Raikkonen, Nico, Piquet, and Trulli in eighth. With the restart the KERS car would have an advantage. Lap twenty three and Sutil would pit from seventeenth. The Safety car would come in on lap twenty four with Button leading from Vettel and Massa. Piquet would go off at Turn one after having a braking moment as Nico went past him going into the first corner.

Nico was now down in ninth as on lap twenty six Button was leading by 2.0 seconds from Vettel, Massa, Kubica, Raikkonen, Trulli, Barrichello, and Buemi in eighth. Nico was attacking Buemi as the top six cars were all on a similar pace. Lap twenty nine and Button was leading by 3.1 seconds. Massa would pit on lap thirty two seeing Nico move into eighth. Nico was still right behind Buemi which was somewhat surprising. Fifth placed Trulli would pit on lap thirty four. Lap thirty four and Kubica was fastest with a 1m:27.989 and closing in
onto Vettel.

RosbergKazuki said that he was quite disappointed and explained that he hit the kerb and that he lost the car on the exit. Kubica was fastest again on lap thirty seven, 1m:27.988. Nico still was not able to get past Buemi as eighth placed Hamilton was closing in onto Nico. Kubica would pit on lap forty followed by Raikkonen from fourth. Kubica would come back out behind Hamilton. Nico was now in fifth. Button was still leading by 4.7 seconds from Vettel, Barrichello, Buemi, Nico, Hamilton, Kubica, and Alonso. Buemi would pit on lap forty two.

Hamilton would pit on lap forty four. Raikkonen would also come in. The reason for this was due to the fact that he was to spin and touch the barrier. Nico would pit the next lap seeing him to drop down to seventh as Vettel pitted on lap forty six taking on the softer tyres. Vettel would stay in front of
Barrichello keeping his second. Raikkonen was down in sixteenth. Massa was slowing and would return to his pit. Button would come in behind Massa for his final stop.

Button would make a slow pit stop as Massa retired in his pit. Nico would go fastest on lap forty nine with a 1m:27.706. He was chasing down sixth placed Glock. Button was now 1.5 seconds in front of Vettel with Barrichello third followed by Kubica, Alonso, Glock, Nico and Fisichella. Fisichella would pit on lap fifty. Glock would pit on lap fifty one. After doing a 1m:27 Nico would do a 1m:30.277. lap fifty two and Barrichello would pit joined by Alonso.
Barrichello would come out behind Nico.

NakajimaAs the laps counted down Vettel was 1.6 seconds behind Button but third placed
Kubica was catching them. Nico was now fourth but Barrichello was able to pass him dropping Nico back to fifth. Nico was now under attack by Trulli. The Toyota driver would pass Nico for fifth as Hamilton also passed Nico. Nico was now down in eighth. Nico's car was not working well on the softer tyres. Vettel and Kubica would make contact and both would get damage to their cars. They would both go off and into the barriers ending their races. Vettel would say that he was very sorry as Vettel ran wide and into the side of Kubica.

So with fifty six laps run the order was Button from Barrichello, Hamilton, Trulli, Glock, Alonso, Nico, and Buemi. Vettel was able to continue after his accident but would eventually pull off the track. With the Safety Car out on the track it would be a race that would finish with the safety Car pulling off and Button would simply have to cross the finish line which he did to win the 2009 Australian Grand Prix. It was a Brawn GP one-two. Raikkonen had retired in his pit with just a handful of laps left.

As for the Williams team the race would see the team secure two points after what could only be described as a frustrating race for the team. The race started with Nico running near the front and Kazuki not that far behind him. But it all went wrong with Kazuki's crash and them Nico getting involved in several problems, the first being his troubled pit stop. Still a point scoring result is a good way to start the year.
