The AT&T Williams team will see their drivers start from seventh and fourteenth for the 2009 Chinese GP. It would appear that the pace of both Nico and Kazuki in the lead up to qualifying was matched by their qualifying performances. The prospects for the race are an unknown but given Nico's practice pace a points scoring finish is a reasonable expectation. For Kazuki the race will be much harder.

 Chinese GP Qualifying

It was confirmed that Toyota's Timo Glock would received a five place grid enalty for a gearbox change after a failure in the final practice session. For the AT&T Williams team their chances for a good result on qualifying were looking encouraging. Only three cars would be running KERS in qualifying as the opening twenty minute period started with Fisichella first out. Sutil and Buemi also came out. Nico would come out early in the period. Bourdais was next out while Kazuki was in his car but was still in his pit. Both Toyota's were out on the track. Webber was also out as Fisichella set the first time of 1m:39.502. Buemi went faster with a 1m:38.394. Nico would go fastest with a 1m:37.646 followed by Buemi, Sutil and Fisichella.

RosbergButton and Barrichello had also left the pit lane. Bourdais was fifth behind Fisichella. Nico would improve with a 1m:37.518 while Bourdais moved into second, 1m:37.696. Trulli was now second with Piquet fourth. Kazuki was now out on the track leaving just three cars in the pits. Webber was now fifth, 1m:37.941. Vettel was now fastest with a 1m:37.351. Button would go fastest but was quickly beaten by Webber with a 1m:37.100. Kazuki had yet to set a time. Massa was now fastest with a 1m:36.780, but he was on the softer tyre. Vettel would improve with a 1m:36.633 to go fastest. Kazuki's first lap was a 1m:36.673 as Button went fastest with a 1m:36.578. on the super soft tyres Hamilton was now fastest from Raikkonen. Button was third followed by Vettel, Barrichello, Kazuki, Massa, Webber, Alonso, Trulli, and Nico in eleventh.

Both Kazuki and Nico had pitted. Barrichello was now fastest with a 1m:36.374. Webber would also run wide entering the pits taking to the gravel. He was able to get out and continue to his pit. Kovalainen had yet to set a time. The top eight were all in their pits. Nico was back out, currently in sixteenth. Kazuki was in seventh. Nico was back out on the super soft tyre. With five minutes remaining Nico was setting personal best times as we saw Kovalainen move up to seventh. Nico would move up to third, 1m:36.385. Kazuki had dropped to ninth. Nico was able to continue his quick pace going fastest in sector one on his next lap. A personal best in the next sector. He would go fastest with a 1m:35.941. Barrichello was now second followed by Hamilton, Raikkonen, Vettel, Button, Buemi, and Kovalainen. Kazuki was back out.

Everyone except for Vettel was out on the track with just minutes remaining. Everyone was out on the super soft tyres. Nico would pit as Massa moved into second. Glock was now third. Webber was now fastest with a 1m:35.751 but
both Button and Barrichello would move ahead of his. Kazuki was down in fourteenth and under pressure. With the end of the session Heidfeld would move into twelfth while Hamilton was now fourth. Kazuki was now fifteenth. So the order was Button from Barrichello, Webber, Hamilton, Nico, Raikkonen, Massa, Buemi, Trulli, Glock, Alonso, Heidfeld, Vettel, Kovalainen, and Kazuki. Those not making the cut were Bourdais, Piquet, Kubica, Sutil, and Fisichella.

NakajimaThe prospects for Kazuki in the second period were not looking good after only just making it into Q2. The second period would start with both Williams drivers coming out. Nico was on the super soft tyres as Kazuki set the first time with a 1m:36.193. Nico was fastest with a 1m:35.809. Button was second with a 1m:36.018. Barrichello would respond with a 1m:35.784 to go fastest. Trulli was now fourth with a 1m:36.050. Raikkonen was now third while Kazuki had dropped to seventh and had pitted.

Webber was now fastest with a 1m:35.632. Hamilton was now second, 1m:35.740. Nico was now fourth while Kazuki had dropped to tenth. Alonso had moved up to fifth, 1m:35.839. Three drivers had yet to set a time with just under seven minutes left in the period. Only Heidfeld and Kovalainen were out on the track. Heidfeld was now up to seventh, 1m:35.975. Kovalainen was up to ninth, 1m:36.032. Barrichello was back out on super soft tyres. He was joined by several other drivers as the final three minutes started. Vettel was out having not set a time. All fifteen divers were out on the track as Button went fastest with a 1m:35.556. Buemi was now eighth. But Webber would move ahead of the Brawn with a 1m:35.173.

Trulli was third as Vettel went fastest with a 1m:35.130. Nico was in eighth while Kazuki would not make the cut been in fifteenth. The top ten was Vettel followed by Webber, Barrichello, Button, Trulli, Hamilton, Alonso, Nico, Raikkonen, and Buemi. Those not making the cut were Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Massa, Glock, and Kazuki.

The final period of qualifying would see Nico first out followed by Trulli and Alonso. Only Vettel and Buemi had yet to come out with three minutes of the period run. With race fuel onboard Nico would set a time of 1m:39.131. He was beaten by Alonso with a 1m:37.586. Trulli was now second, 1m:38.172. Webber was fastest with a 1m:37.188, But he was beaten by Barrichello with a 1m:37.146. Nico had pitted while Button was in third, 1m:37.392. Vettel was leaving it late as we had yet to see times from Hamilton, Buemi, and Vettel.

Nico would start his final lap as Vettel left the pits. Nico was on a better lap setting a personal best in sector one and two. Hamilton was on a quick lap. Nico would improve to fourth, 1m:37.409. Hamilton would move up to seventh. Webber was now fastest in sector one. With the end of the period several drivers had yet to complete their final lap. Webber was now fastest with a 1m:36.466 as Button went into second with a 1m:36532. Vettel was now fastest with a 1nm:36.184 as Alonso moved into second with a 1m:36.381. Webber was in third followed by Barrichello, Button, Trulli, Nico, Raikkonen, Hamilton, and Buemi in tenth.

So the AT&T Williams team will see their drivers start from seventh and fourteenth. Kazuki would move up one place from his fifteenth qualifying position but Glock would drop down the order to his penalty. It would appear that the pace of both Nico and Kazuki in the lead up to qualifying was matched by their qualifying performance. As for what fuel the Williams cars were carrying will be announced shortly. The prospects for the race are a bit of an unknown but given Nico's practice pace a points scoring finish in a reasonable expectation.
