May 8 2009

After the second Friday practice for the 2009 Spanish GP the AT&T Williams team would see its drivers fill the top spots. Nico Rosberg would lead team-mate Kazuki Nakajima, seperated by just 0.152. Late in the sesssion Nico would stop out on the circuit but despite this the day was a positive start for the team. But so have many other practice sessions only to see the drivers struggle in the race.

 Spanish GP Friday 2nd Practice

With the AT&T Williams drivers finishing in fifth and sixth in the opening Friday practice it was a positive start to the weekend of the 2009 Spanish Grand Prix. Kazuki Nakajima would finish ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg and as the second Friday practice session got underway both drivers would take to the track. along with nine other drivers. The drivers would quickly set times with Piquet fastest, 1m:25.624, from Nico. Kubica would move to the top of the times with a 1m:25.197. Piquet was still second followed by Webber, Nico, Glock, Vettel, Trulli, Alonso, Kazuki, and Bourdais. Buemi would stop his car at Turn one with fire coming from the rear brakes. It should be noted that Kubica was on the softer tyre.

RosbergGlock would move up the order into first position with 1:24.010, while Piquet was second with a 1m:24.061. Barrichello was now fourth behind Kubica. Alonso was fifth and Vettel sixth. Nico had pitted and had dropped down the order to be fifteenth. Kazuki was still out on the track and currently ninth, 1m:24.614. As the times continued to fall Piquet would move ahead of Glock while Barrichello went fastest. Vettel was now third followed by Glock, Hamilton, and Alonso. Vettel was now second, 1m:23.469 while Nico returned to the track. Kazuki had pitted along with most of the field. Button was down in sixteenth but on a quick lap. He would move up to third, 1m:23.533. On his next lap Button would go fastest with a 1m:23.057.

On their return to the track both Kazuki and Nico would improve with Kazuki going fastest with a 1m:22.551. Piquet's times were set on the softer tyre. Webber was out for his second run, moving up from fifteenth to sixth with the use of hard tyres. His time of 1:23.398 put him within one second of the leader, Kazuki. Webber would improve to now be in second while Vettel would move to the top of the times with a 1m:22.400. Kazuki would pit currently second. Nico was still out on the track but down in seventh. Vettel was on the softer tyre. Kazuki was able to return to the top of the times with a 1m:21.805 using the softer tyre. Barrichello was now in third. Nico was able to move up to sixth, 1m:22.851. Kazuki would cut a few tenths off his time with a 1m:21.758. Kazuki would pit joined by second placed Vettel.

With forty minutes left in the session the order was Kazuki from Vettel, Barrichello, Webber, Piquet, Nico, Button, Glock, Hamilton, and in tenth Raikkonen. Kovalainen was able to move up to eighth after having spent a large amount of time in the McLaren garage. The softer tyre was certainly holding up to longer runs while Piquet would spin off into the gravel at the Campsa corner. He was able to get out with some help and return to his pit. Fisichella had moved into fifth Nico would drop to eighth. Kazuki was back out as Barrichello moved into second, 1m:21.843. Nico was over a second slower than team-mate Kazuki.

NakajimaWith twenty three minutes left in the session Alonso was able to move up to third but Nico would also improve to now be third, 1m:21.866. He was outside the top ten but with the use of the softer tyre was able to improve his time. Alonso was now fourth followed by Webber, Vettel, Piquet, Button, Fisichella, and Bourdais in tenth. After having his car repaired Buemi was able to return to the track. At the front it would be Nico who would go fastest with a 1m:21.731 to be 0.027 ahead of Kazuki. Sutil had yet to set a time. Both Nico and Kazuki had pitted with fifteen minutes left in the session. Button was out on the track while Hamilton and Kovalainen were down in fifteenth and sixteenth. Button would improve to be seventh while team-mate Barrichello was third, 1m:21.843.

Nico would return to the track, joined soon after by Kazuki. With under eight minutes remaining most of the field was back out on the track. Nico would go fastest in the second and third sectors. He would improve his time with a 1m:21.588. On his next lap Nico would set a personal best in sector one. As the final minutes counted down only four drivers were still in their pits. Alonso was now third, 1m:21.781. But for Nico his session would end pulling off the track at Turn ten. Was he running light on fuel and simply ran out? He was seen weaving his car from side to side which would seem to indicate that he was trying to get the last fuel from the FW31's fuel tank.

With the end of the session Nico would remain fastest from Kazuki with Alonso third followed by Barrichello, Webber, Button, Vettel, Piquet, Buemi, and Raikkonen. Nico and Kazuki would complete eighty three laps between them with Nico completing forty three. Despite Nico having his problem the day was a positive one for the AT&T Williams team. But so have many other practice sessions for the Williams team only to see their race performances leave a lot to be desired. Will they turn things around this weekend?
