The second Friday practice for the 2009 European GP would see a strong result for the AT&T Williams team with Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima finishing in 4th and 5th. It was a session that would see the times fall as the track improved with both Kazuki and Nico setting fastest times. The team would continue their testing of tyres during the session in what was a good day for the team.

 European GP Friday 2nd Practice

The second Friday practice session would commence with the AT&T Williams team seventh and twelfth fastest after the opening Friday practice session. Nico would come out early in the session followed shortly after by Kazuki. Various drivers would set the quickest time but it would be Hamilton who would go fastest with a 1m:43.214. Alonso and Kovalainen would move ahead of him with Alonso's time a 1m:42.661. Alonso would improve with a 1m:41.861 with Buemi second followed by Sutil, Kovalainen, and Button in fifth. With fifteen minutes completed Nico would move into second with a time of 1m42.156s - almost three-tenths of a second behind Alonso.

RosbergBarrichello was up to third while Grosjean was up to seventh. Kazuki would join Nico near the top of the order, moving up to third with a lap of 1m:42.201. Nico would improve his time but remained in second but was just 0.054 behind Alonso. Nico would set a fastest time in the first sector while we would start to see drivers come out on the super soft tyres. Grosjean would spin at Turn three as Raikkonen moved up to fifth, 1m:42.362. With thirty minutes completed Barrichello would move up to second but Nico would move ahead again with a 1m:41.724. But Nico would go fastest with 1m:41.588 and team-mate Kazuki would move up to second place, just 0.063s behind the German.

Alonso was now third while Sutil, running on the softer tyre was now fourth. Nico was able to find a few tenths setting a time of 1m:41.488, while Vettel moved up to second. Kazuki was now third followed by Alonso, Sutil, and Raikkonen. Button was now fastest with a 1m:41.534 while Nico on the super soft's could improve on his second. But Nico would beat Button's time with a 1m:41.394, but he would run wide at Turn five. Running on the harder tyres Heidfeld moved into second. Alonso, also on the harder tyre, would go quickest with a 1m:41.324. Glock would move into fifth while team-mate Trulli went fastest with a 1m:41.204.

The Brawn drivers would respond with Barrichello go fastest with a 1m:40.944, while Button would move ahead of the Brazilian with a 1m:40.911. Trulli was third with Alonso fourth, Nico fifth and Heidfeld in sixth place. Raikkonen was now fifth while Barrichello moved ahead of Button with a 1m:40.813. Kovalainen was now sixth while Hamilton was stuck in his pit as his mechanics worked on his car. Alonso would again move to the top of the times with a 1m:40.620.

Nico was now tenth and Kazuki twelfth. Glock was now fourth from Trulli in fifth. Kubica was up to sixth, 1m:41.083. With twenty three minutes remaining Kazuki was back out on the track, joined by Nico shortly after. Kazuki was on the super soft tyres as we saw Nico and Kazuki in eleventh and twelfth. On a quick lap Kazuki was able to move up to sixth, 1m:41.014. Coming into the final corner Alonso would run into the side of Heidfeld's BMW seeing the BMW fly up into the air coming down heavily. Both cars would be able to get into the pit lane with Alonso running over his broken front wing.

While this was happening Kazuki was able to put in a quick lap with a 1m:40.503 to go fastest. Nico would move up to fifth with a 1m:40.883. Barrichello was fastest in sector one and two and would go quickest with a 1m:40.209. Kazuki had pitted while Nico would improve with a 1m:40.385 to move up to second. Nico was on the super soft tyres as Button moved into third with a 1m:40.418, again on the super soft tyres. Kazuki was now fourth, followed by Alonso, Kovalainen, Trulli, Webber, Glock, and Raikkonen in tenth. Nico would return to the track with just over six minutes remaining.

Button would improve to be second, 1m:40.352. So we had two Brawn's followed by two Williams cars. Sutil would move from fifteenth to sixth, 1m:40.695. Hamilton was slowest as the final minutes counted down. Only a handful of drivers were in their pits but this became just Heidfeld and Hamilton who were having work done on their cars. Alonso was on a quick lap going fastest with a time of 1m:39.404. Button was up to second, 1m:40.178, to be 0.774 behind Alonso. Sutil would improve but remained in sixth. Nico and Kazuki were now fourth and fifth. While trying to set another quick time Alonso would spin but was quickly again going.

Fisichella was up to eighth as the session came to an end. So it was Alonso from Button, Barrichello, Nico, Kazuki, Sutil, Kubica, Fisichella, Kovalainen, and Raikkonen in tenth. The drivers would start to pit while we would see Vettel move into ninth. Grosjean was in thirteenth.
