The 2009 Belgian GP would see AT&T Williams driver Nico Rosberg finish in 8th to score a single point. Kazuki Nakajima finished in thirteenth. For the Williams team the whole weekend has been a real struggle with the FW31 not really on the pace. Nico was able to get the best result that the FW31 was able to achieve on the day while Kazuki had another lack lustre performance.

 Belgian GP Race Review

With Nico Rosberg and Kazuki Nakajima qualifying tenth and eighteenth the AT&T Williams team was facing two different strategies for the forty four lap Belgian Grand Prix. Kazuki was running the heaviest car in the race while Nico was the heaviest of the top ten. The spotlight must be on Kazuki's future with the Williams team. With the Force India of Fisichella on pole and Trulli second the grid would move off on the parade lap. Heidfeld was fourth from Barrichello, who was the lightest of the top ten. It was expected to stay dry for the whole Grand Prix. Fisichella was on the softer tyre while Trulli and Heidfeld were on the harder tyre. It was expected that Nico would pit on lap seventeen while Kazuki would stop on lap twenty eight.

RosbergThe cars would form up on the grid with Fisichella on pole. Barrichello and Kubica were on the softer tyre while Vettel was on the harder tyre. Nico was also on the harder tyre for the start. The lights would go out and they would head off down to Le Source. Barrichello would almost stall on the grid as the cars all went which way around Le Source. Raikkonen would move into third up the hill and would pass Kubica for second. But there would be chaos at Le Combes with Button spinning taking Grosjean with him. Button was hit from behind but Grosjean and Hamilton would all spin into the barrier and out of the race. Four drivers would retire as a result of the mayhem at this corner.

Several drivers would pit including Barrichello who switched to the harder tyre. It was a messy first lap from the field with Alguersuari also out. Trulli would also pit along with Sutil. With the Safety car out as the marshals tried to clear up the debris from the accident Fisichella was leading from Raikkonen, Kubica, Glock, Webber, Heidfeld, Nico, and Vettel in eighth. Kazuki, also on the harder tyre, was up to twelfth. Red Bull was trying to claim that Nico had passed Vettel under yellow flags. Lap three and the the Safety Car would be at the end of this lap.

NakajimaIt was looking good for Raikkonen who was on more fuel than Fisichella. As they crossed the line Fisichella stayed ahead but Raikkonen would pass the Force India easily on the run up the hill after Eau Rouge. Kubica was third while Vettel was now in front of Nico. Raikkonen would set a new fastest lap with a 1m:49.555 as the started lap five. Vettel would pas Nico going into Le Combes. This was not surprising given Nico's heavier fuel load. Lap six and Raikkonen was again fastest with a 1m:48.090 to be 1.4 seconds ahead of Fisichella. Nico was in eighth and 1.0 seconds behind Vettel. Barrichello would pass Kazuki for twelfth. Lap eight and Raikkonen was fastest again with a 1m:47.749.

Sutil would also pass Kazuki for thirteenth while Nico was still in eighth. Lap nine and Raikkonen was leading from Fisichella by 1.9 seconds. Kubica was in third from Glock, Webber, Heidfeld, Vettel, and Nico. Nico was told that he needed more pace while Nico was now be 4.2 seconds behind Vettel. Kubica and Glock would pit on lap thirteen. Kubica would come back out in ninth while team-mate Heidfeld was fastest on lap thirteen with a 1m:47.783. Nico was now on sixth and Kazuki fourteenth. lap fourteen and both Raikkonen and Fisichella would pit. They were joined by Heidfeld and Webber. Vettel would set a new fastest lap with a 1m:47.646. Webber would nearly run into Heidfeld coming back out onto the pit lane. Would he get a drive through penalty. But Heidfeld would pass Webber at Le Combes.

RosbergVettel was now leading from Nico with Raikkonen in third. Fisichella was fourth from Alonso, Kubica, Kovalainen, and Buemi in eighth. It was announced that the stewards were investigating the release of Webber into the path of Heidfeld. A ive through penalty was given while Vettel would pit on lap seventeen, staying on the harder tyre. Nico was now leading, if temporarily. Vettel would come back out in eighth. Fisichella was keeping up with Raikkonen while Nico would pit on lap nineteen while Webber would serve his drive through penalty. Nico would stay on the harder tyre, resuming in eleventh.

Fisichella was just 0.9 behind Raikkonen with Alonso third. Kubica was fourth from Kovalainen, Buemi, Vettel, and in eighth Heidfeld. Glock was challenging Nico for eleventh. Seventh placed Buemi would pit on lap twenty two. Trulli would retire in his pit on lap twenty three. Sutil would male a mistake and Nico would close in onto him with Glock still right behind the Williams. Kazuki was in fourteen and still to pit while Fisichella was being told to push to close the gap to Raikkonen. Lap twenty three and Raikkonen's lead was just 0.7 seconds while Alonso would pit from fourth on lap twenty five taking on the softer tyre. But there was a problem with the left front seeing his race plans go up in smoke. He was stationary for thirty five seconds, coming back out in fourteenth.

NakajimaReplays showed the front wing of a Force India car hitting Alonso's left front wheel possibly explaining why Alonso had his problem in his pit stop. Raikkonen was leading by 0.8 from Fisichella with Kubica third. Kovalainen was fourth but would pit on lap twenty seven. Alonso was told to drive carefully back to his pit to retire due to the problem with the left front wheel. Sutil had also pitted. Nico was back into eighth but was 12.1 seconds behind seventh placed Barrichello. But Barrichello would pit on lap twenty eight while twelfth placed Kazuki would set his fastest time with a 1m:49.355. Nico was now in sixth while Kazuki would make his only stop on lap twenty nine. Nico was 17.0 seconds behind Heidfeld. Kubica would pit on lap thirty one, joined by eleventh placed Buemi.

RosbergBoth Raikkonen and Fisichella would pit on lap thirty two. The softer tyre for Raikkonen while Fisichella would take on the harder tyre. They would come back out in third and fourth with Raikkonen opening out his lead. Heidfeld would pit from second on lap thirty three while eighth placed Glock would also come in. Vettel was leading from Raikkonen and Fisichella. Fisichella was fastest in Sector three. Nico would make his second stop on lap thirty four seeing him drop down to ninth. Nico was now on the softer tyre. Fisichella continued to closely follow the Ferrari of Raikkonen. Lap thirty four and Heidfeld was fastest with a 1m:47.541 while Webber pitted don lap thirty five.

Webber would come back out behind Nico in ninth. Team-mate Vettel would pit on lap thirty six taking on the softer tyre, resuming in third ahead of Kubica. Nico was now eighth with Webber looking for a way past the Williams. Vettel was fastest on lap thirty seven with time of 1m:47.331. Kubica was fourth from Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Barrichello, and in eighth Nico. Vettel continued to push going faster again n lap thirty eight, 1m:47.263. But with six laps remaining it was looking like a difficult task to catch second placed Fisichella. Both Nico and Webber would set personal best laps as they continued their fight for eighth. Lap forty and Raikkonen lead by 1.0 seconds with Vettel 3.6 seconds behind Fisichella.

RosbergNico was now 1.0 seconds in front of Webber after lap forty one. Barrichello was following Kovalainen but smoke was now seen coming from the back of his car. Barrichello was told to back off as he had did have a problem with his engine, seeing Nico and Webber close rapidly on the Brawn. Lap forty four and Raikkonen would start his final lap. The Brawn team suggested that Barrichello's problem was just an oil leak while at the front Raikkonen would hold off Fisichella to take victory in the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix. Fisichella would come home in an excellent second with Vettel third. Kubica was third from Heidfeld, Kovalainen, Barrichello, and Nico in eighth. Barrichello's car was on fire as it came down the pit lane.

For the AT&T Williams team the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix would see just a single point for Nico while Kazuki was down in thirteenth. For the Williams team the whole weekend has been a real struggle with the FW31 not really on the pace. Nico was able to get the best result that the FW31 was able to achieve on the day while Kazuki had another lack lustre performance. The team must be getting frustrated with his lack of pace.
