Rubens Barrichello would finish ninth in the second practice session for the 2010 Australian GP. It was a session that was run under varying conditions with rain falling. Nico Hulkenberg would finish in fourteenth. A difficult session to gauge the performance of the Williams drivers but after Nico's admission that they had been running with low fuel it was a bit of a concern over their pace.

 Australian GP Friday 2nd Practice

The second Friday practice session would see rain falling but despite this there would be a rush of drivers taking to the circuit. Nico Hulkenberg was amongst them as the rain continued to fall. Several of the drivers would pit including Nico. The only drivers who continued to run on slicks were those of the Sauber team. It was now a case for the teams of seeing how the weather behaves. Both Sauber cars would pit leaving the track empty. Nico was back on the pit wall taking to his engineer. For the Williams team it was a case of staying in their garages as the rain was expected to last only ten minutes.

HulkenbergFirst back out was Force India's Sutil running on intermediates. He would pit after one lap as Rubens came out joined by Nico Hulkenberg. The Williams team had been testing a new engine cover at this event. Rubens would set a time of 1m:31.006 while Nico would set a time of 1m:32.971. More drivers were now taking to the track including both Red Bull's, both Mercedes Benz GP cars, and both McLaren's. Nico would go fastest with a 1m:29.835 while Webber was now third. Rubens was now fastest with a 1m:27.585 with Sutil third. It was all changing with Rosberg now fastest, 1m:27.464, followed by Rubens, Kubica, Hulkenberg, Sutil, Webber, Button, and Kovalainen. Rubens time was 0.629 behind Rosberg. Hamilton was now fourth from de la Rosa and Hulkenberg. Button was now fastest with a 1m:26.735 but Hamilton would go faster with a 1m:26.648. Hamilton was on the softer tyre. Both of the Williams drivers were doing setup work and tyre evaluations.

Button would improve with a 1m:26.076 while Sutil had moved up to third. Rubens was now seventh and Hulkenberg tenth. Hamilton was now fastest with a 1m:25.801 with Petrov now third. Both Williams drivers had dropped down one place as a result of Petrov's improvement. Nico was running on the softer tyres setting a 1m:27.545 but remained
tenth. Alonso and Massa were in fourteenth and fifteenth. Rubens was able to improve moving up to fifth, 1m:26.904. This would become sixth as Buemi moved into fourth from Liuzzi. Hulkenberg had pitted from twelfth. With just under an hour remaining Hamilton was fastest from Button, Petrov, Buemi, Liuzzi, Rubens, Sutil, Rosberg, Kubica, De la Rosa, Kobayashi, and Nico. The rain was only affecting certain parts of the track. Button was out running on the softer tyres as the rain started to fall harder. The drivers would return to the pits leaving several drivers having failed to set a time, including Schumacher. Alguersuari would come back out running on a set of intermediate tyres.

Rosberg had also returned to the track, joined by several other drivers. Third placed Petrov was running along with both Mercedes cars. Nico had also come back out currently in twelfth. Rubens had said that it was now quite wet enough to run on the intermediates. Schumacher had reported that his intermediates front tyres were graining up. With thirty five minutes remaining Hamilton's fastest time of 1m:25.801 was unlikely to be beaten given the wet conditions. The rain was easing as Nico was in his pit discussing what they would run. Nico asked if they should do another low fuel run. Only three drivers were out on the track with twenty minutes left in the session. Rubens was back out running on the softer tyre. Nico would also come out as Rubens struggled for grip on the slick tyres.
Several other drivers had left the pit lane as Schumacher improved to be fourteenth with a 1m:28.716. The rain would start to fall heavier again as most of the field were out on the track. Schumacher was now eleventh, 1m:27.298, while Hamilton returned to the track with eight minutes left.

Schumacher was now third, 1m:26.522, but was most likely on a low fuel run. Rubens was now seventh and Nico thirteenth. The track was now very busy as Button went fastest in sector one. Webber was now third from Schumacher and Petrov. Vettel would go off at Turn six spinning off when his left rear tyre ran over the grass. Rubens was lucky not to be hit by Button when Rubens had slowed down at the final turn. The Ferrari's were down in fifteenth and seventeenth. The session would come to an end with Rubens in ninth and Nico fourteenth. A difficult session to gauge the performance of the Williams drivers but after Nico's admission that they had been running with low fuel during the session it was a bit of a concern for their pace. Hamilton remained fastest from Button, Webber, Schumacher, Petrov, Buemi, Sutil, Liuzzi, Rubens, and Rosberg in tenth.
