Nico in eleventh

September 10 2010

It would be an inconclusive start for the AT&T Williams team in the opening Friday practice for the 2010 Italian Grand Prix. Team driver Nico Hulkenberg would finish down the order in eleventh while team-mate Rubens Barrichello would not even complete one lap with a failure with his car seeing him pull off the track at the Lesmo corners. But it is early days for the team.

 Italian GP Friday 1st Practice

The opening Friday practice session for the 2010 Italian Grand Prix would commence with Buemi first out followed by the drivers coming out for their installation laps. For the AT&T Williams team they had brought low down force aerodynamics for this race and had announced that they would be using the F-Duct system on their cars. Schumacher would set the first time with a 1m:31.396 but his next lap would see him set a 1m:28.150. With the track quite empty several drivers had returned to the track including Buemi, Petrov, and Rosberg. Buemi would pit while Kubica took to the track. AT&T Williams driver Nico Hulkenberg was on the pit wall talking to his engineer as we saw fifteen minutes of the session completed.

HulkenbergKubica would pit after one lap while Button left the pit lane. The only two drivers yet to come out were Yamamoto and Senna. Schumacher was back out while Button started his first flying lap. Alguersuari was next out joined by Webber. Button would not set a time and would pit. Petrov would return to the track. Rosberg had pitted while Schumacher would set a 1m:26.805. He would improve with a 1m:26.341 while Alguersuari would set a 1m:28.639. The Torro Rosso driver would set a 1m:27.424 while Schumacher would again improve with a 1m:26.038. Schumacher would pit while Petrov and Hamilton took to the track. Hamilton and Alguersuari would move ahead of Schumacher with Hamilton setting a 1m:25.897 and Alguersuari a 1m:25.897. Hamilton was running fairly higher downforce and he would improve with a 1m:26.623.

Nico was out on the track and would set a 1m:28.679. Hamilton would again improve with a 1m:24.990 while Kobayashi set a 1m:28.866. Hamilton and Alguersuari would pit while Kobayashi would jump over the kerbing at the first chicane. Nico had improve with a 1m:26.585 while Di Resta left his garage joined by Rosberg. Nico continued to circulate and would move up to third with a 1m:26.020. Both Red Bull cars were also out on the track along with De la Rosa. Kobayashi would improve with a 1m:27.109 but remained fifth. Buemi was sixth as we had Massa and Di Grassi take to the circuit. Di Resta's first lap would see him seventh, 1m:29.755. Buemi was now fifth while Rosberg's first lap was a slow one with a 1m:31.236. Vettel and Webber were seventh and eighth while Nico had pitted. Webber would drop to tenth as De la Rosa and Di Resta moved ahead. Vettel would improve to jump up to second, 1m:25.455, followed by Alguersuari, Nico, Schumacher, Kobayashi, Webber, De la Rosa, Rosberg, and Buemi in tenth.

Rubens Barrichello was now out on the track joined by Petrov, Button, Kubica, and Yamamoto. As the times came down Webber had moved into third, 1m:25.832, followed by Rosberg, 1m:25.858. Nico was now in sixth while Vettel moved ahead of Hamilton with a 1m:24.450. Rubens would not make it around a single lap pulling off the track after the exit of the second Lesmo ending his practice. It appeared to be some form of drive failure. Button was up to fourth and on his next lap he would move into second, 1m:24.494. Hamilton was now third from Webber, Massa, Rosberg, Alguersuari, Nico and Schumacher in tenth. Kubica was now in fifth, 1m:25.427, but this would become seventh as Alonso and Di Resta moved into forth and fifth. Vettel would set a 1m:23.872 taking half a second off his previous quick time. Nico was now in twelfth with a 1m:26.020.

HulkenbergButton would set a 1m:24.119 but remained in second. The Williams team was not sure of what caused Rubens failure. There was forty minutes remaining in the session as Kubica moved into third, 1m:24.923, while Button went fastest with a 1m:23.756. Rosberg would move ahead of Kubica with a 1m:24.782. But Kubica would move ahead with a 1m:24.159 to again be in third. Hamilton was fifth from Alonso, Di Resta, Webber, Massa, and Buemi in tenth. Button would improve with a 1m:23.693 while Nico would return to the track. Hamilton was back out on the track and would improve with a 1m:24.477 to be fourth. Nico would improve to jump up to tenth but on his next lap he would move up to sixth with a 1m:25.007. Button would pit while Nico would again improve with a 1m:24.841 but remained in sixth. Several drivers were having problems in braking for the first chicane.

Schumacher would improve to be eighth with a lap of 1m:25.200, while Nico had pitted. There was thirty minutes remaining in the session while Di Resta improved to be eighth, 1m:25.058. His next lap would see him move into seventh, 1m:24.932. Rubens was back in the pits taking to Williams staff. There was a lot of discussion regarding the levels of downforce that various teams were running. McLaren was running a high level of downforce while Mercedes saw running a low level of downforce. Kubica was back out currently in fourth, 1m:24.159. Alonso was now in eighth while Webber was currently on eleventh while team-mate Vettel continued to put in many laps. Neither Lotus had set a time after hydraulic problems. Nico was back out on the track while Kovalainen set a slow 1m:32.800. More drivers were back out on the track including Button, Rosberg, and Alonso.

Alonso was now in sixth while Massa was down in thirteenth. Petrov was down in eleventh and Webber twelfth. Alguersuari would make a mistake at the Parabolica which would see him take to the gravel. He would rejoin the track and would immediately pit. Webber was able to find time jumping up to fifth with a 1m:24.446. Senna would pull off the track ending his session. Button was still fastest with his 1m:23.693, from Vettel, Hamilton, Kubica, Webber, Alonso, Massa, Rosberg, Nico, and Di Resta in tenth. Massa had moved into seventh with a 1m:24.648. Rosberg was on a quick lap seeing him set a 1m:24.129 and into fifth. Both McLarens were putting in longer runs while quite a few drivers had returned to their pits. With just over ten minutes remaining Nico would return to the track. Button would make a quick stop in the pits while Vettel took to the track. Nico would drive through the pit lane completing a pit lane time test.

Schumacher would improve to be ninth with a 1m:24.756. Nico was now in tenth as the track became very busy. Only four drivers were in their pits with five minutes left in the session. AS the final minutes counted down there was very little changing with Button still fastest from Vettel, Hamilton, Kubica, Rosberg, Webber, Alonso, Massa, Schumacher, and Nico in tenth. Liuzzi was on a strong lap towards the end of the session and would move up to eighth with 1m:24.578. This would see Nico drop to eleventh as the session came to an end. Liuzzi would improve with a 1m:24.512 to be seventh. As the drivers started to return to their pits the first practice session for the Williams team was not that encouraging with Nico only eleventh with a 1m:24.841, to be 1.148 seconds off the quickest time. As for what was Rubens failure we are yet to find out but all been well he should be back for the next session.
