Spanish GP: Williams off the pace in FP2

Rubens Barrichello

For the AT&T Williams F1 team the second Friday practice for the 2011 Spanish GP did not see any real pace with Rubens Barrichello and Pastor Maldonado finishing 14th and 16th. But it would come down to how the team used the session, whether it was more the case of longer runs with both Williams drivers testing the updates rather than sheer pace. The big question now is whether the updates on the FW33 have worked and whether they will allow both Pastor and Rubens to set times closer to the front.

The second Friday practice for the 2011 Spanish Grand Prix would again be run under dry and clear conditions. Alguersuari would be first out followed by D'Ambrosio and Kobayashi. More drivers would take to the track including AT&T William's Rubens Barrichello. After his earlier off-track moment Pastor Maldonado was back on the track joining his team-mate. Alguersuari would set a 1m:29.278 but Kobayashi would move ahead with a 1m:28.776. Rubens was in fourth with a lap time of 1m:29.612. As more drivers set times it would be Massa who was fastest with a time of 1m:27.056. Heidfeld was now second but this would become third as Alonso went to the top of the times with a 1m:25.707.

Rubens was now seventh while Pastor was one place behind with a lap of 1m:29.641. On his next lap Rubens would improve to be sixth, 1m:28.908 with Pastor now ninth. Massa would pit while Alonso improved on his quickest time with a 1m:25.445. Pastor would also improve with a 1m:28.737 to be sixth with Rubens now seventh. As quicker times were set Pastor and Rubens would drop to eighth and ninth. Button was now second, 1m:26.325, while Vettel was currently slowest with a 1m:34.301. Button would also improve with a 1m:25.769. Webber and Vettel were in sixteenth and seventeenth. Rubens would move ahead of Pastor, moving into ninth, 1m:28.441, with Pastor now tenth, 1m:28.737. Pastor would pit as Petrov moved up to fifth one place behind Heidfeld.

Button had pitted briefly while Vettel had moved up to eleventh, 1m:28.827. In the early stages of the session the harder tyre was the most common tyre choice. Rubens would find some further pace with a 1m:27.990 to be fifth. Petrov was now sixth while Pastor had dropped to eleventh and Vettel now tenth. Webber was in twelfth as Rubens pitted after a ten lap run. Hamilton would improve greatly moving from twentieth to first with a lap time of 1m:25.236. Sixth placed Petrov would improve, 1m:27.431, but remained sixth. Pastor would return to the track with an hour and ten minutes remaining. Petrov would jump into fourth, 1m:26.686, as Hamilton completed his run.

Pastor was out on the softer tyre improving greatly to go fourth with a 1m:25.974. Pastor would be the first driver to use the option tyre. So it was Hamilton fastest from Alonso, Button, Pastor, Petrov, Massa, Heidfeld, Rubens, Kobayashi, and Perez in tenth. Vettel and Webber were in twelfth and thirteenth as they continued their longer runs. Alguersuari would move into seventh, 1m:27.153. Pastor would find more time moving into third with a 1m:25.603. Perez would improve to be ninth seeing Rubens drop to tenth. Pastor would pit after his soft tyre run while Vettel was on a quicker lap but with a slow final sector would remain twelfth. Vettel and Webber had completed thirty one laps between them. Schumacher and Rosberg were in seventeenth and eighteenth.

Buemi had moved into eleventh but he would move up one place with a 1m:27.932. Perez would move up to sixth, 1m:26.810, as Vettel pitted. Webber would also pit as Button and Petrov returned to the track. Rubens had also come back out as Petrov would set a 1m:24.786 on the option tyre. Pastor had also left the pits joining Rubens. Button was on an improved lap, running on the harder tyre, moving into fourth. Pastor was now fifth now running on the harder tyre. With fifty minutes of the session remaining the track was getting warmer. Button would pit while Alonso and Hamilton would return to the track. Vettel would leave the pit lane running on the option tyre. Petrov had pitted as Alonso moved into second, 1m:25.138, while Kobayashi moved into tenth, 1m:27.293.

Vettel would immediately go fastest in sector one and two. He would complete his lap with a 1m:22.826, to be 1.960 seconds ahead of Petrov. Webber had also come out on the option tyre as Vettel went faster again on his next lap. Heidfeld was now in second with a 1m:24.366, seeing Vettel now 1.540 seconds ahead. A massive margin for the Red Bull driver. Vettel would lose a few tenths in the final sector not improving his lap time. Perez was now third with a 1m:24.614. Webber was on a quick lap going fastest in sector one and two. He would go fastest with 1m:22.470. Perez was on another quick lap finishing his lap with a 1m:24.493 to remain fourth. Pastor was now in tenth while Rubens was down in thirteenth. Both Red Bull cars would pit. Rubens would pit while for Mercedes Rosberg would move up to third with a 1m:23.586.

Button was in tenth and back out on the option tyre. Schumacher would improve to now be in fourth, 1m;23.981, as Kobayashi moved into sixth, 1m:24.290. On the option tyre Button would move up to third, 1m:23.188, while Pastor and Rubens were now in thirteenth and fifteenth. Pastor had completed twenty six laps and Rubens twenty one. Pastor had a few extra laps on the softer tyre. Rubens was now on the softer tyre for this run and he would improve with a 1m:25.303 to be twelfth. Pastor was now down in fourteenth. Hamilton was currently in tenth and out on the option tyre. He was on a quicker lap moving up to second with a 1m:22.509. Vettel would return to the track as Rubens again found some more time in the first two sectors but would lose time in the final to remain twelfth. Hamilton would pit as Alonso returned to the track on the option tyre.

Rubens would pit with twenty seven minutes remaining. Pastor was continuing his longer run as Buemi moved up to twelfth, 1m:25.296. Alonso was now in fifth with a 1m:23.568. Webber was out on his next run as Vettel did a longer run on the option tyre. Rosberg was now sixth as Massa moved up to eighth, 1m:24.278. Di Resta was on a quicker lap moving up to seventeenth, 1m:26.073. Pastor had pitted with Rubens and Pastor now in fourteenth and sixteenth. Alonso would pit with eighteen minutes remaining. Rubens and Pastor were both back out on the track while Hamilton also came out. Both Ferrari's were in the pits with fifteen minutes remaining.

Rubens was again on the option tyre as Alonso returned to the track. It was now very busy out on the track with neither of the Williams drivers improving their positions. Rosberg and Schumacher were now in sixth and seventh. With nine minutes remaining only Sutil and Karthikeyan were in the pits. There were lots of long runs on the softer tyre as the session drew to a close. Now we had all twenty four cars out on the track but Heidfeld would pit, joined by Massa. Massa would return to the track while Vettel would pit after a sixteen lap run on the harder tyre. Three minutes remaining and Rubens and Pastor remained in fourteenth and sixteenth. Webber would also pit joined by Schumacher.

Rubens and Pastor had completed thirty seven and forty two laps as the session drew to a close. There was just 0.3 seconds separating the pair. Hamilton would pit just prior to the session end. The session would end with Webber still fastest from Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Alonso, Rosberg, Schumacher, Massa, Kobayashi, and Heidfeld in tenth. For the Williams team the session did not see any real pace but it would come down to how the team used the session, whether it was more the case of longer runs for both Williams drivers rather than sheer pace. IT would come down to how the updates on the FW33 were working and whether they will allow both Pastor and Rubens to set times closer to the front.
