The opening Friday practice for the 2011 Italian Grand Prix would see Petrov and Chandhok head out first on a sunny day. Pirelli would be supplying its medium and soft compound for this race. For the A&T Williams F1 team it would be Pastor Maldonado who would come out first for his installation lap. Rubens Barrichello would come out and be the last to return to his pit after his installation lap. Rubens would be using a new helmet design for this race. There would be two DRS zones for this race as we had Buemi, Alguersuari and Massa out on the track. All three would pit leaving the track empty.

Next to come back out was D'Ambrosio running on the medium tyre. He would set a 1m:43.577 as Glock also came out, followed by Button. D'Ambrosio would pit as we had Alonso also come out. Button would pit after one lap as Rosberg took to the track. The drivers would pit as Schumacher came out only to also pit. D'Ambrosio and Kobayashi were now back out on the track and like the others would pit prior to setting a time. With just over
an hour remaining it would be Ricciardo who was next out. Chandhok and Perez were next out as Ricciardo set a 1m:34.675. Ricciardo would improve with a 1m:33.223 on his next lap. Chandhok would return to the pits complaining of an issue with his steering wheel.

Hamilton would improve with a 1m:24.512 with forty minutes remaining. Rubens would improve with a 1m:28.743 to be sixteenth. Hamilton would pit as the track became fairly empty as the drivers assessed their first runs. Rubens was now fifteenth with a 1m:28.046. Button was also at the front now in second, 1m:25.409. The only drivers yet to set a time was Glock. Rubens would also pit as we had Rosberg and Schumacher seventeenth and eighteenth. Sutil would improved to be seventh, 1m:27.095. Pastor had dropped to thirteenth to be one place ahead of Rubens in fourteenth, 1m:27.493. Pastor was back in his pit as Vettel moved up to second, 1m:25.231. Button was now in third from Webber, Petrov, Alonso, Hulkenberg, Massa, Kobayashi, and Sutil in tenth. The drivers continued to use the harder medium tyre and it would probably be in the second session where they would start to use the soft tyre.

Rubens had moved ahead of Pastor with a 1m:27.352 and he would also pit with twenty minutes remaining. Webber would improve with a 1m:25.459 but remained fourth. With fifteen minutes remaining the track would become fairly quiet as D'Ambrosio came to a stop at the first chicane with smoke coming from his car. Team-mate Glock had yet to set a time. Of the top ten only Alguersuari was out on the track, currently in seventh, 1m:26.696. Glock was out on the track for his first run joined by both Williams cars. Hamilton was also out on the track after his mechanics made adjustments to his car. Pastor had said that he felt the aero balance of his car was good. Button was back out with ten minutes remaining. Schumacher had improved to be twelfth, 1m:27.116, as Rubens and Pastor had dropped to fourteenth and fifteenth.

The track had become very busy as the drivers came out for their final runs of the session. Only six drivers were in their pits as Button improved to be second, 1m:24.963. We now only has Alonso, Alguersuari, and Chandhok in the pits. Perez would improve to be tenth, 1m:26.876as Hamilton went fastest in sector one. Button was on an improved lap joined by Hamilton. Hamilton would remain fastest but would set a 1m:23.865 to be ahead of Button by 0.921.

Rubens would drop to thirteenth while Pastor was in fifteenth. Both drivers would complete twenty five laps during the session under the watch of both Frank Williams and Patrick Head. It is very early days for the Williams team as they prepare for Sunday's race. But having said that both Rubens and Pastor were around three seconds off the pace. A very big margin to makeup.
