Qualifying for the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix would see the Williams F1 team start the second half of the 2012 season with a third place grid courtesy of Pastor Maldonado. A fantastic effort from Pastor but for team-mate Bruno Senna he would struggle only managing seventeenth.

For the Williams
F1 qualifying for the 2012 Belgian Grand Prix would be one based on a very
limited amount of dry weather track time due to the wet weather on Friday,
so in order to asses their true performance was difficult. The final
practice would see team drivers Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna finish in
eleventh and seventeenth. No doubt that Bruno would be hoping to continue
his improved qualifying performances. It had been previously announced that
both Webber and Rosberg would get five grid place penalties for gearbox
changes. On the tyre front the drivers had
the medium and hard tyres to choose from.
The opening twenty minute period would commence with Pic coming out first
followed by Glock and Rosberg. Others to come out were Di Resta, Pastor,
Bruno, Hulkenberg, Kobayashi, Vergne, and Grosjean. Ricciardo was next out
joined
by Schumacher. The drivers would start their timed laps but we weer yet to
see the likes of the Red Bull or Ferrari cars out on the track. A 1m:53.493
from Pic with both Pastor and Bruno on the hard tyre. A 1m:51.125 from
Rosberg with Glock now second. But Di Resta would go fastest with a
1m:50.033 and Pastor second, 1m:50.178. Kobayashi was now second and Pastor
third. Hulkenberg was fourth from Grosjean. Perez was now fastest with a
1m:49.7642. Pastor was fourth and Bruno eighth with a 1m:50.062. More
drivers had come out with just the Red Bull's and Raikkonen still in their
pits.
Perez was fastest with Hulkenberg now second. Pastor was now sixth and Bruno
ninth. Pic would pit with twelve minutes remaining. Bruno was looking a bit
wild running wide as both Hulkenberg and Grosjean pitted. But Bruno would
improve with a 1m:50.481 to be eighth after what was now a really clean lap.
Pastor was seventh as some of the front runners set times. Hamilton was now
second with a 1m:49.803 and Alonso third. Alonso was on a quick lap going
fastest in sector one. Button was now ninth pushing Bruno down to tenth.
Pastor and Bruno would both pit with nine minutes remaining. Alonso would
complete his lap with a 1m:49.401 to be fastest. Webber and Raikkonen had
now come out joined by Vettel. |

Hamilton would go second with a
1m:49.605 with just a handful of drivers on the circuit. Pastor was back out
for his second run while at the front Button would go fastest with a
1m:49.250. More drivers would return to the track running on the medium
tyres. Raikkonen was now third with a lap of 1m:49.546. Webber was in sixth
while it was announced that Pastor and Hulkenberg were under investigation
for impeding. More drivers were on the medium tyre with Pastor on a quick
lap. Pastor would improve and would go fastest with a 1m:48.993. Bruno was
also back out on
the medium tyre with two minutes remaining. Only Button was in the pits but
Webber would join him. Button was second from Hulkenberg and Alonso. Bruno
was down in thirteenth while Massa would improve to be sixth.
Pastor would pit as the period drew to a close. Ricciardo would improve to
be sixth, 1m:49.572. Bruno had dropped to fifteenth as the drivers returned
to their pits. Those not making the cut were Rosberg, Kovalainen, Petrov,
Glock, De La Rosa, Pic, and Karthikeyan. The top ten was Pastor from Button,
Hulkenberg, Alonso, Raikkonen,
Ricciardo, Massa, Hamilton, Perez, and Kobayashi in tenth. Vettel was in
eleventh followed by Schumacher, Vergne, Webber, Bruno, Di Resta, and
Grosjean in seventeenth. |

With both Williams drivers
making it into the second fifteen minute period it would be Perez out first
on the medium tyre. He would be joined by Di Resta and Kobayashi. Webber was
out on the medium tyre joined by several other drivers including Pastor.
Vettel, Massa, and Alonso had also come out joined by others. We had only
Button and Bruno still in their pits. Button's mechanics were working on his
rear wing as Perez set a 1m:48.880 to be fastest. This time would no doubt
come down. Bruno would take to the track as Di Resta set a 1m:49.753. But
Kobayashi went second but Webber would move to the top pf the times with a
1m:48.662. Hulkenberg was now fourth with Button now on the track.
Alonso was now fastest with a 1m:48.598. Pastor had set a 1m:51.081 to be
twelfth. Grosjean was now third with Perez fourth and back in his pit. Now
it was Hamilton's turn to go fastest with a 1m:48.563 but Raikkonen would
take this spot with a 1m:48.414. Pastor was now in fifteenth but his next
lap would see him fail to improve while Button would go fastest with a
1m:47.654. Bruno had pitted having yet to set a time. Bruno had almost spun
at Pouhon. Pastor would also pit leaving just Button on the track. There
were four and a half minutes remaining as Kobayashi came back out. Raikkonen
was told that they did not plan to run again. Di Resta and Massa were also
back out, joined by Vergne and Ricciardo. |

Webber was back
out on a new set of the medium tyre with just Button and Raikkonen still in
their pits. The drivers would start their timed laps with the majority on
improved laps. Kobayashi was now fourth, 1m:48.569, while Di Resta moved up
to eighth and the period came to a close. Vergne was in eleventh as Pastor
set a 1m:48.780 to be ninth. Hulkenberg was in tenth as Ricciardo went
fourteenth. Perez was now second while Vettel could only manage eleventh.
Bruno would finish his lap finishing in seventeenth, 1m:50.088, to be over
two seconds off the pace.
So those not making the cut were Vettel, Hulkenberg, Schumacher, Massa,
Vergne, Ricciardo, and Bruno. The top ten was Button from Perez, Raikkonen,
Webber, Hamilton, Kobayashi, Alonso, Grosjean, Di Resta, and Pastor. Bruno's
pace was about what his practice paced showed he was capable of but it still
must have been frustrating as this result equalled his worst ever qualifying
effort. But a great effort for Pastor to make the final period of
qualifying. |

The final ten minute period would commence with Di Resta first out followed
by Raikkonen, Hamilton, and Grosjean. Button was also on the track while
Pastor came out. We had yet to see Webber, Alonso, and the Sauber pair come
out as Di Resta pitted without commencing a timed lap. Pastor was quick on
his put lap as Raikkonen set a 1m:48.205 to be quickest. Hamilton would make
a mistake seeing him pit joined by Grosjean. Button would set a 1m:47.686 as
Pastor also pitted without setting a time.
With five minutes remaining only two drivers had set a time. Raikkonen would
pit joined by Button leaving the track empty. Kobayashi would come out for
his first run joined by Pastor and Di Resta. Raikkonen would also return
joined by Alonso and Button. Everyone was out on the track with two minutes
remaining. It would be a case of only one timed lap as Alonso went fastest
in sector one. But Button would also improve to be faster as Kobayashi et a
1m:47.871 to be second Pastor set a 1m:47.893 to be third. Raikkonen would
not improve finishing in fourth. Webber was fifth while Button would go
faster with a 1m:47.573. Perez was fifth followed by Webber, Hamilton,
Grosjean, and Di Resta tenth.
For Sauber this was the first time that Kobayashi was on the front row. With
his penalty Webber will start from twelfth. For Williams Pastor's third
place was a fantastic effort and a great way to start off the second half of
the 2012 season. |
