Austrian GP: Podium finish for Bottas
By Andrew Hooper
June 23 2014
The 2014 Austrian GP would produce the first podium finish of the season for the Williams Martini courtesy of a 3rd place finish from Valtteri Bottas. Team-mate Felipe Massa would finish in 4th in a race that saw the pair start from the front row but would find the task of running with the Mercedes cars as difficult as they had expected. Despite this the result was a fantastic one for the team that showed that they are making progress forward.

After a
qualifying session that would see the Williams Martini team secure first and
second grid positions with Felipe Massa securing pole and Valtteri Bottas a
close second. IT was a fantastic result for the Williams team but now they
had the seventy one lap to cope with. Both Williams drivers had concerns in
regard to the Mercedes cars with Rosberg third on the grid and Hamilton
ninth. Fourth was Alonso followed by Ricciardo, Magnussen, Kvyat, Raikkonen,
Hamilton, and in tenth Hulkenberg. Drivers had again been warned about
running wide at certain corners in particular Turn eight which is near the pit entrance. All the top ten would have to start of
the option super soft tyre with only Button, Maldonado, Perez, Bianchi,
Ericsson, and Chilton on the soft tyre. Grosjean would start from the pit
lane.
With Felipe leading them away the grid would move off on their parade lap
and would form up. The lights would go out and the grid would run up to the
first corner. It would be Felipe leading but with Rosberg second but
Valtteri would get this place back at Turn two. Rosberg was now third
followed by Alonso, Hamilton, Magnussen, Raikkonen, and Ricciardo. Hamilton
would pass Alonso at Turn eight seeing him behind Rosberg. Vettel would slow
and would come on saying he had lost drive. Lap two and Felipe was leading by 1.0 seconds over Valtteri. Rosberg was
still third but with Hamilton close behind. Vettel was able to get going
again but was a lap down getting in the way of the field coming past. Vettel
would come on the radio saying that he again had drive. |

Vettel seemed to
be running normally but a lap down while at the front two seconds covered
the top four cars with Felipe leading by 0.8 after five laps. Alonso was 4.1
seconds behind Hamilton after lap six. Kvyat was running ninth with
Ricciardo in tenth. Both Red Bull cars were told not to use their overtake
buttons at all during the race. Rosberg was now 1.2 seconds behind Valtteri
while Rosberg had Hamilton close behind. The super soft tyres in the leading
four cars were marking up as Felipe continued to lead. Vergne would pit from
fifteenth on lap eight coming back out in twentieth. Lap nine and Felipe was
now 1.1 seconds in front of Valtteri as Hulkenberg pitted on lap ten to get
the soft tyre. Alonso continued to fall away from Hamilton while Magnussen
and Kvyat both pitted. Ricciardo would also come in on lap eleven taking on
the soft tyre.
Perez and Button who had started on the soft were now seven and eight.
Rosberg would pit from third on lap twelve taking on the soft tyre. He would
come back out in eighth while Hamilton was 1.1 seconds behind Valtteri.
Sutil would also pit while Alonso had lost a large amount of time to be 7.8
seconds behind Hamilton. Rosberg was now seventh and ahead of Button and had
set the quickest first sector. Hamilton would pit on lap fourteen coming
back out behind Rosberg in seventh. Rosberg was now sixth while at the front Felipe would pit on lap fifteen with Alonso
following. Rosberg was able to get past Felipe as he came out of the pits.
Hamilton would also get past Felipe at Turn two as Valtteri pitted on lap
sixteen. Raikkonen would also come in as Valtteri came back out behind
Rosberg but ahead of Hamilton. |

Valtteri was
running second and Felipe fourth with Hamilton third. Perez was currently
leading but had yet to pi as he started on the soft tyre. Rosberg was right
behind Perez and in DRS range. Felipe was now 1.2 seconds behind Hamilton
with the top five all closing together. It was encouraging to see both
Williams cars still setting competitive times compared to the Mercedes.
Alonso would pass the yet to pit Maldonado for seventh. Button was now sixth
3.1 seconds behind Felipe. Gutierrez would get a 10 second stop & go penalty
for an unsafe release. Hamilton was now right behind Valtteri and looking to get past at Turn two. Felipe had been
able to close the gap to Hamilton as Vettel pitted from last on lap twenty
two. Rosberg continued to run behind Perez but Perez was still looking
comfortable in the lead. Hamilton was told to lift and coast where he could
making it look like fuel was an issue.
Hulkenberg would pass Maldonado for ninth while Kvyat would go off with a
damage with his right rear wheel after a failure. He would come on the radio
saying he had no brakes and this caused his off. Perez would finally get
past by Rosberg at Turn two. Valtteri would also get past and Hamilton was
able to get close behind the Force India car. Maldonado would pit from
eleventh with Button also coming in on lap twenty eight. Rosberg was now
leading from Valtteri, Hamilton, Perez, and Felipe. Perez would pit on lap
thirty taking on another set of soft tyres making it a two stop strategy.
Valtteri had closed in onto Rosberg and was looking to get past the
Mercedes. It was a very poor lap from Rosberg that saw Valtteri close the
gap. Felipe was told that Rosberg ahead looked slow with Felipe setting
times quicker that the leading three. |

Perez was now
eighth while replays showing Rosberg running wide at Turn one losing time to
Valtteri. But at the front Rosberg was able settle things down seeing him
open his lead over Valtteri to 1.3 seconds after lap thirty three. Felipe
was now 2.3 seconds behind Hamilton with Alonso 5.3 seconds behind the
Williams. Lap thirty six and Vettel was told to pit to retire his car. Lap
thirty nine and Felipe was told to close the gap to the cars in front. Lap
forty one and Hamilton would pit and Rosberg was told to pit the next lap.
Both Mercedes drivers would get the soft tyre while at the front Valtteri
was now leading from Felipe and Alonso. Valtteri would pit on lap forty
three coming back out behind Hamilton. Hamilton had set a 1m:12.217 on his
lap seeing him close onto Valtteri and seeing him get past. Felipe would pit
taking on soft tyres seeing Alonso now leading. from Rosberg and Hamilton.
Valtteri was told that he was racing for third and just to bring the car
home. Felipe was running in fifth and behind Perez who had yet to make his
second stop. Alonso was now sixth after having pitted with Button seventh
followed by Magnussen, Hulkenberg, and Ricciardo tenth. Hamilton was told
that he had the same brake issue that Rosberg had and that it would have to
be managed. Hamilton was 1.8 seconds behind Rosberg with Valtteri 5.8 seconds behind Hamilton. Alonso was
now 4.1 seconds behind Felipe and this would have to be something that he
would have to watch as the race drew to a close. Perez would pit from fourth
on lap fifty seven coming back out in eighth. Perez was now on the option
tyre for his run to the finish. Valtteri and Felipe were now running third
and fourth with Valtteri 8.1 seconds behind Rosberg. Valtteri was 3.3
seconds ahead of Felipe while behind Felipe Alonso was closing in. |

Lap sixty and the order was
Rosberg from Hamilton, Valtteri, Felipe, Alonso, Magnussen, Perez,
Hulkenberg, Ricciardo, and Raikkonen in tenth. Alonso continued to close in
onto Felipe and it was looking like he would challenge for fourth prior to
the finish. Felipe was being held up by traffic but was able to keep the gap
to Alonso fairly static. Perez was looking to get past Magnussen who was
running in sixth. Valtteri was running comfortably in third as Perez passed
Magnussen on the run up to Turn two. At the front Hamilton was closing in
onto Rosberg with five laps remaining. As the final laps counted down the
gap between the two leaders remained static while fro Williams Valtteri and
Felipe were still third and fourth and looking to secure a large haul of
points. The leader would start his final lap with Hamilton now in the DRS
zone. He would have one chance to use it with Rosberg locking up at Turn
two. But Rosberg would come across the line to take victory in the Austrian
GP. Valtteri would come home third for what was his first podium finish.
Felipe was in what must be a disappointing fourth followed by Alonso, Perez,
Magnussen, Ricciardo, Hulkenberg, and Raikkonen tenth.
For the Williams team it was probably the best result that they could have
achieved given the pace of the Mercedes cars. Valtteri would be cheered by
his mechanics when he got out of his car. Even after qualifying the Williams
team had spoken of how difficult the race would be given the pace of the
Mercedes cars. They were proved to be right in their assessment but a third
and fourth was a fantastic result with twenty seven points secured. The next
race is Williams home race and another opportunity to achieve a good result. |
