Spanish GP: Uneventful FP1 for Williams Racing.

August 14 2020

In what was an uneventful but also hard to assess first Friday practice session for the 2020 Spanish GP the Williams Racing Team would see their drivers Nicholas Latifi and Roy Nissany finish in 19th and 20th, last in the field. For Roy he had replaced George Russell for this session so it was not unsurprising to see him slowest but he was just behind his team-mate by 0.3s. As for Nicholas Latifi he did seem to focus on longer runs even while on the soft tyre so it was hard to assess his overall pace. The next session will see George Russell return and then we may be able to judge the pace of the Williams drivers.

The opening Friday practice session for the 2020 Spanish GP would see the Williams racing Team run reserve driver Roy Nissany replacing George Russell. Vettel would set the first time with a 1m:24.910 running on the hard tyre with a new chassis to evaluate. Leclerc was second with a slow 1m:36.645 with the track now empty. But Bottas would go quickest with a 1m:18.757 on the medium followed by Verstappen and now Ricciardo. Bottas would improve with a 1m:18.573. On the soft tyre Ricciardo would move in to second followed by Verstappen. Sainz was fourth followed by Raikkonen, Perez, Grosjean, Stroll, Albon and the Williams of Nicholas tenth.

Perez would improve to be third on the soft tyre followed by Grosjean on the hard in fourth. Hamilton on the hard tyre would move into second behind Bottas. Fifth was now Ricciardo, Grosjean, Verstappen, Stroll, Sainz and Raikkonen tenth. Hamilton would go quickest with a 1m:18.516 to be ahead of Bottas and Perez. After their first runs the Williams drivers weer in 16th and 19th. Albon was now in tenth doing a longer run on the hard tyre. With the first forty minutes completed the track would empty as drivers came in to return their first set of tyres. Drivers would return for soft tyre runs with Grosjean gong third followed by Perez, and Magnussen fifth. Magnussen would improve to be fourth followed by Perez, Sainz, Ocon, Norris, Giovinazzi, and Raikkonen tenth.

Bottas was now quickest with a1m:16.785 running on the soft tyre followed by Hamilton. On their soft tyre runs Leclerc and Vettel would move into third and fourth. Verstappen was now in third but 0.9 behind the leader Bottas. With twenty mi9nutes remaining in the session the order was Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Vettel, Grosjean, Perez, Magnussen, Stroll, and Sainz tenth. Albon was able to improve to be eighth after a soft tyre run. the final fifteen minutes would see drivers out on longer runs with the medium and soft tyre been the main choices. As the final few minutes counted down the track was very busy with just two drivers on the hard Nicholas and Ricciardo. With the end of the session the top ten would be Bottas, Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Vettel, Grosjean, Perez, Albon, Magnussen and Stroll tenth. For Williams Racing the results were sort of expected with Roy slowest but his time on the same tyre was close to his team-mate so overall a positive performance. For Nicholas he seemed to focus on longer runs so hard to assess his real pace. FP2 will see George return to his car.

Roy Nissany:
Roy would make his first appearance for Williams running on the soft tyre. Roy would also come out for his timed run also using the soft tyre. Nissany would complete a 1m:23.989 lap, five seconds off the pace but it is his first run in the FW43. He would improve with a 1m:23.613 to be unsurprisingly slowest. He would find a big amount of time with a 1m:21,516 to move closer to Magnussen ahead of him. Roy would also pit after a nine lap run. With forty minutes remaining Roy was back this time on the medium tyre. He was currently last in the times. His current time was a 1m:20.664 to be just 0.3 behind Nicholas. Roy would spin his car at Turn ten but was able continue. He would pit and with just under fifteen minutes left in the session he would return on the medium tyre running to just before the end of the session.

Nichols Latifi:
Nicholas would be first out for this Friday session. he would be running on the hard tyre. Nicholas would pit after a single lap. He would also pit after a single lap. On his next run Nicholas would return running on the soft tyre. Nicholas would set a 1m:21.075 to be second if only temporarily. Nicholas would tell his engineer that underneath his butt it was quite hot, more than he had ever felt it. Nicholas would improve with a 1m:20.368 to currently be seventh. This wuld become ninth. With a 1m:20.334 Nicholas would currently be 15th. He would pit after a ten lap run on the soft tyre. As more times were set Nicholas would drop to 19th ahead of his team-mate. With just over thirty minutes remaminging Nicholas would return this time on the hard tyre. Nicholas would pit after a nine lap hard tyre run. Bt he would return again on the hard tyre to complete another longer run of seven laps.
