Portuguese GP: As expected Williams Racing Qualifying

By Williams Racing
October 24 2020

The results, based on their practice form, would see the qualifying results for the Williams Racing Team turn out pretty much as one would expect. George Russell was able to move in to Q2 and would finish in a respectable 14th. For Nicholas Latifi his difficult weeknd would continue finishing qualifying in 20th and last. It was made even more frustratuing for the Canadian as he felt that he could have found a better time from the car but traffic did not help. Now it was up to the team to try and make Sunday;s race a positive one as it has been very much the case of an encouraging Saturday only to be let down by a poor Sunday.

Team Summary:
With qualifying delayed due to the repairs to lose drain covers then opening period would get underway with a rush of drivers coming out all on the soft tyre. Kvyat would set a 1m:18.408 but Perez would go quicker with a 1m:18.040. Sainz was second from Ricciardo, Norris, Ocon, and Gasly sixth. Bottas would go quickest with a 1m:17.064 while the Williams drivers were 15th and 18th. Norris went second ahead of Perez. Verstappen was able to go quickest from Bottas and Hamilton. Perez was fourth followed now by Leclerc, Gasly, Norris, Sainz, Stroll and Albon tenth. Hamilton would go quickest with a 1m:16.828 as the track emptied. Both Williams drivers would return again on the soft tyre. With the top five remaining in their pits the rest were out for second soft tyre runs. Williams drivers after their second runs were 16th and 19th. Their second laps on this set of tyres would see one driver George make it out of Q1 in 15th while the other Nicholas would finish the period in 20th.

The second period would see Bottas out on the medium joined by Hamilton and both Ferrari's, everyone else was on the soft. A 1m :16.466 from Bottas followed by Perez, Norris, Verstappen, Gasly and Leclerc sixth. Hamilton was able to go second from Verstappen, Perez, Sainz, Norris, Gasly, Leclerc, Albon and Ricciardo tenth. Drivers all on the soft tyres were back out with George going 14th. Ricciardo would spin going in to the gravel but was ale to get out and slowly drive back to his pit. With the end of the period that was it for Williams Racing with their cars finishing in 14th and 20th. Sort of around where based on their practice performances where they would be. It was still great work by George to be able to get into Q2.

The final period would commence and after the first runs it would be Bottas quickest with a 1m:16.986 followed by Hamilton, Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez, Sainz, Norris, and Albon. Gasly and Ricciardo had yet to set a time. On their second runs Hamilton and Albon would come out on the medium tyre. They would be joined by Bottas while Hamilton would set a 1m:16.934 to be quickest. But Bottas would go quicker with a 1m:16.754. Verstappen would go second ahead of Hamilton but Hamilton would get pole with a 1m:16.652 with the top ten Bottas, Verstappen, Leclerc, Perez, Albon, Sainz, Norris, Gasly and Ricciardo would not set a time with the issues having gone off in Q2. For Williams racing it was very much the expected result with George making it into Q2 and finishing 14th and Nicholas in 20th, which was a disappointment for the Canadian.

Russell

George Russell:
George would join Nicholas out on the track also on the soft tyre. George was on a reasonably slow preparation lap. A 1m:36.073 from George as he prepared his tyres. A 1m:18.832 and George was currently 13th dropping to 15th. He would drop further to be 18th and would pit after a six lap run. George would improve with a 1m:18.440 to be 16th and on his next lap he would set a 1m:17.931 to be 15th. George was particularly happy with been able to make it into Q2. On his first Q2 run George would set a 1m:18.404 to become 15th as he pitted after a three lap run. His next run would see him set a 1m:17.788 to be 14th. He would pit remaining in 14th and his qualifying was at an end.

Nicholas Latifi:
Nicholas on the soft tyre would be first out for Williams using the soft tyre. He would set a 1m:37.356 as he prepared his tyres. A 1mn:18.908 would see Nichols 10th dropping to 17th. A 1m:18.494 from Nicholas would see him 14th dropping to 15th but his time was deleted. he would drop to 20th and slowest as he pitted after a six lap run. He would return on a new set of soft tyres and would improve with a 1m:18.777 to be 18th and ahead of his team-mate. His next lap was not an improvement remaining 19th. He would dropt o 20th and slowest and fail to make it into Q2. A real struggle for Nicholas in what has been a difficult weekend so far. But post qualifying interview with Nicholas he felt that traffic did not help as he felt there was more time to be found.
