Young gun Tommy Hill was given a wildcard entry at the May Bank Holiday World Superbike meeting - round five, held at Silverstone. He wasn’t there to make up the numbers, as he showed his ability when he took the number one spot during the Superpole qualifying on the Saturday.

Although he fell during the last few minutes of qualifying, his time stood and he was to lead the best in the world off the start line come race-day.

He held off some of the world’s best riders during the course of both races, and finished with a brace of 12th positions. Talking to Tommy afterwards, as he was leaving the track, he said, “I am absolutely thrilled by my performance today. Trying to fend off the likes of Alex Barros, Haga, Abe and the like is really something. I was holding fourth place for a few laps, but these boys are really quick. I take my hat off to them. It was a great confidence boost to know we were all on the same tyres, and I am over the moon with my performance as I gave it my all out there. We’re not sure if I am going to any more rounds, but Brands would be good as it’s my local track.”

Tommy showed he was more than capable, beating riders who have been racing in the series for some time now, and he certainly has the taste for it. This will give him an extra boost for this weekend’s round of the British Superbike series, taking place at Mallory Park.
