Round 10- Nurburgring- Germany
The German Grand Prix has been held at the current Nurburgring circuit since 1927, the Nurburgring circuits has held the German Grand Prix event 36 times.
There has been much controversy over the name of the event this year, many people believe it to be the German grand prix, although the official name of the event is the European grand prix.
From 2007 to 2010, the German Grand Prix will be held alternately between the Nurburgring and the Hockenheimring, due to the Hockenheimring being put under financial pressure. The German government have only agreed to pay for one event, and as we all know, nothing is free in formula one.
Michael Schumacher and Ferrari are the most successful team to have competed at the Nurburgring , the bulk of these wins were during the dominant period when Ferrari (2000-2004)
Michael Schumacher still holds the fastest lap of the circuit, which was set way back in 2004. It is unlikely that the lap record will be beaten this year. Last years fastest lap was two seconds slower than Michaels incredibly quick lap time which he set two years earlier.
2007 will mark the 37th time that we visit a Nurburgring circuit, after the older 14 mile circuit was removed from the formula one calendar after Ferrari driver, Niki Lauda’s car caught on fire, Lauda exited the car, but his face would be permanently damaged.
For those of you that want to race at the original Nurburgring can either fly to Germany, with their own car and race at the circuit for 25 laps at just over 300 euros, plus the cost of travel. Or, racing fans can buy either an Xbox or a Sony playstation 2, or 3 and buy either project gothem racing or Gran Turismo 4, both games feature the Nurburgring.
The European grand prix will be held at Valencia next year, leaving the German grand prix to be held at the Hockenheimring.
The Technical Side
The German Grand prix has a mixture of medium to high speed corners, with a few slow ones just to mix things up, most notably the first corner, as the FIA believe this will improve overtaking.
