It's a knockout for F1

Its been a rumour that has been knocking about for ages but today it was confirmed that Formula 1 would go to a all new Qualifying system for next year. The new system is hoped to spice up the show and this is how it works:

-Session to be run in a knock-out format.

- All 20 cars run in first 15 minutes; slowest five take bottom five grid places (16-20); remaining 15 cars go through to next 15 minute session.

-Five minute Advertisement break to accommodate TV schedules.

-Second 15 minute session for remaing 15 cars; slowest five take 11-16th places on the grid. Fastest 10 go through to final 20-minute shoot-out session.

-Second five-minute ad break.

- Final 20 minute shoot-out for fastest ten cars. This will determine the top-ten grid slots.

-Laps to be unlimited, therefore to allow more cars on track.

-Cars to qualify with race fuel and Parc Ferme conditions to be retained between qualifying and the race.

-Races to be run to existing format.

The One lap qualifying system which has been in place since the big rules shake up in 2003 has been unpopular with the fans, and there have been calls to replace it since it came into play. This new system looks good on paper but will it deliver the goods? Time will tell....
