On the second day at Paul Ricard Renault headed the time sheets again, but this time with a one-two. Alonso got the better of tester Kovalainen as the pair completed well over 200 laps. It was the final day for both of the Toyota race drivers, who will be replaced by Zonta and Panis for tomorrow. With Fernando Alonso and Heikki Kovalainen up front for Renault, an impressive third was Jacques Villeneuve in the BMW-Sauber. The team having only arrived at the circuit put in an impressive performance although the teams second driver Nick Heidfeld finished at the back of the field.

Christian Klien and David Coulthard put in a limited amount of laps with Klien finishing fourth and Coulthard ending the day eighth.

Jarno Trulli and Ralf Schumacher continued to develop the teams new TF106B, Jarno finishing 0.3 seconds behind Alonso, whilst Ralf was a second behind the fastest man.

The day’s only incident came in the form of Villeneuve’s BMW engine letting go in the afternoon, although on times it didn’t slow him down.

Ricardo Zonta and Olivier Panis will take over from Ralf Schumacher and Jarno Trulli tomorrow.
