Jerez Day One: RB5 Shakedown Report

Sebastian Vettel was at the wheel of Red Bull Racing’s 2009 car, the RB5, for its first ever track appearance here at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit. After the traditional photo-call, Seb completed the installation lap before returning to the garage for the car to be checked over.
Over the course of the next few hours, he completed more laps providing useful information for the team, until concerns with the gearbox brought the shakedown to a close.
Christian Horner:
"Following a successful shakedown, we stopped the car as a precautionary measure because the gearbox oil temperature was beginning to rise. We ran with our KERS system fitted to the car, but it was not operational. We simply carried it to assess its impact on other elements of the package, such as weight distribution, and to study the effects on the system of vibrations and other forces."
Sebastian Vettel:
"The guys did a fantastic job to get the car here and ready for this first run. I was happy to be driving again, but don't ask me to comment on the feel of the car as it's far too early for that. With the shakedown out of the way, we can get down to developing the car starting tomorrow and over the next few days. Stopping early today was the right decision, as you really need to understand exactly what causes any problem on a brand new car."

Unfortunately, the new rules prohibit vents in the body, except in an area very close to the centerline of the car.
The exhausts now run much further back though, so I guess these could be affecting things?
Hopefully its something much simpler such as a dodgy oil pump or kinked pipe to blame.

The webber vc vettel battle should be fascinating, hopefully the team can deliver a car that can finish a race.
Give it time. I'm sure the engineering's all good.

Translation: What a disappointment considering the work we did to get here today. I was so keen to get behind the wheel but the car just felt like @#$%&. We've got a lot of work to do to get the balance and set up right. Thank god it broke because I was likely to put it in the wall!

This is what I was saying in the other thread, we ARE behind in testing. This was a dry day to ourselves and it was basically useless. If we'd had the car out with everyone elses then we would've found this problem at the last test in the wet.

Would have been cooler in the wet => gearbox wouldn't have blown its cool => RB5 would have been hailed a success => until yesterday when it would have broken down at higher temperatures => like it did anyway => we missed a birdie and got par => move on to the second hole.

if this was happening at the end of the month then it may be a problem but surely on the first full day of running some possible problems will be encountered. hardly armageddon.
Got the info from the Williams board test thread and now LoudHoward has posted it in the RB test thread....WHHOOOOO fastest of the 09 cars on only its 2nd day of running!!!

True the day is not over... but McLaren are there and i think the McLaren is as fast as the BMW or the Ferrari so if we are as fast as McLaren then BMW or Ferrari do not need to be there to know we are as fast as them aswell!
