On the final day of Red Bull Racing’s first test of 2012, Sebastian Vettel managed the day’s third fastest lap, despite losing the morning session due to an engine related electrical issue with his RB8.
The defending world champion had completed just two installation laps in the morning when the problem occurred. The relevant part was replaced, but concern that the issue may have caused damage to the engine, led to a precautionary engine change ahead of the afternoon.
Vettel got running again shortly after lunch and then put in 48 untroubled laps to bring the team’s opening test to a close and, despite the shortened second day in the car, Sebastian left the track encouraged by the weeks’ work.
“I’m happy with the progress we’ve made, I think we managed to get a lot done,” he said. “Of course, this morning was a bit of a setback but these things happen.
“Something like this is simply part of testing, this is the reason why we are here,” he added. “Of course we would like to get more laps done, but that can't be changed now. So we go back to the factory, look at everything we have learned from this week and prepare for the next test in Barcelona, where I’m looking forward to putting some more miles on the car.”
Head of Race Engineering Ian Morgan added: “It was frustrating to lose those hours in the morning as we had a lot to get through, but when Seb did get out, we made a pretty good recovery and we actually managed to get almost everything done.”
Commenting on the four days in Jerez, Morgan said: “It’s been quite encouraging. We are where we expected to be, based on the data we had from the factory. That’s good for later in the season as if you’ve got good trust in the tools at your disposal at home it makes development work on the car a lot easier.
“In terms of the problems we had today, well, all I can say is it is part and parcel of testing. You take a complex car and put it on the track for the first time and it only takes one small thing to go wrong to upset your programme. We’ll ship the car home in one piece now, take a look at everything, pull it apart and then rebuild it for the next test in Barcelona. But, all in all, a very positive week here I think.”
I get the feeling that RBR are not going to have the half second quali gap this year and may find things harder. But it looks fast enough to be in the hunt. More fascinating is how Webber comes back this year against wunderballs.
Ferrari look all at sea but Mclaren are going to be a threat. I see the early races between these 2 with Lotus snapping at the heels.
those are bold predictions oz especially after only four days testing. what is it, apart from a feeling in your kidneys, that would indicate a loss of advantage in quali?
what is the point? if you post some possible 'pie in the sky' based on a few laps of jerez especially in the knowledge that what is being tested is not going to be the same car when the lights go green in melbourne.
if the testing is inconclusive then what about the new rules re 'blocking' being drawn into the equation as well? too many variables to even hazard a guess. maybe, just maybe, when the final test in barca is complete it may warrant some crystal balling.

You know my profession so I say this with my deepest honesty
That my friend is such a ridiculous engineering answer !
It's sport have fun!!!
Remember ...
no F1mania it's not a sport. it is a business first and maybe a sport second. following that perspective i posted my response, clearly an engineering interpretation, facts, not fanciful thinking.
That's right k1
All fans across globe turn up to race weekends
And topic is I wonder how sauber's figures are this year ....
Lap 39 ....
Oh btw
Who's coming first
Lol
That's ridiculous
what are you on about LH? why haven't you posted the entire message sequence, pure conjecture in the context of the total message espousing some ambivalence. typical i suppose...scouring the past looking for scraps to try and prove a point..which is?
you can be a PITA sometimes LH...isn't it about time that you grew up?
It has nothing to do with this thread, you didn't respond to the post I made about the above quote in the original thread, so I brought it here where you were posting and asked a direct question about it to avoid any confusion.
As for the point, I'm curious.
As for your last line, let me just get it all out of the way:
You: *Some smart @#$%& comment*
Me: *Some smart @#$%& reply*
You: *Some comment about no points for second place* "I can dish it out but not take it"
Me: *Winning the argument*
You: "I'm done with this conversation" *fire some parting salvo*
Me: *Response to salvo*
You: *More posting after you're "done" with the conversation because you need the last word*
K1 what is the point? if you post some possible 'pie in the sky' based on a few laps of jerez especially in the knowledge that what is being tested is not going to be the same car when the lights go green in melbourne.
i think that you are trolling LH. i have no idea what you are on about. your arrogance is overwhelming. if you cannot fathom out what my response was in keeping with the thread topic then that is your problem. i don't dance to your tune LH. if you don't agree with what i have posted, so what?
opinions are just that, opinions....as i said before, grow up.
F1mania....my point was, and i'm sure that you really do understand, that i simply asked oz a question re what was it that helped him to form such a specific analysis of 'the pecking order'.
i also thought that it was a light hearted comment but now everyone and his aunty wants to dump?
his sentiments are just his sentiments and he hasn't responded which is fine by me. i don't have any problem with that. i won't do a LH and chase him all over the site asking for an explanation. if oz wants to reply i'm sure he will.
all i was saying k1 is that since all of us, assuming, we arent on the board or paid by these f1 teams, hence us being fans, if one comes out predicting, i clap my hands as they took a punt
dont down someone who punts, if they get it wrong thats punishment enough
not sit back and go oh yes i told you this blah blah, has a punt f1 fans !
grrrr- so analytical to the extreme!

Well, the problem is I can fathom what you were saying, but it just appeared so wrong that I was thinking I read it incorrectly and was hoping you'd explain to me what you actually meant.
The fact you still don't want to discuss it and are deflecting answers my query fine though, so thanks.

i think F1man you took the wrong inference from my post. i simply stated that it was too early and too inconclusive to make any attempt to assess the field and the prospects of where they will finish. a simple proposition. is that too difficult to understand? if others want to 'crystal ball', fine by me.
LH, you still don't get it do you. i have explained, to the best of my ability, and you are still banging on. sometimes debating with you is like being in a nursery.

We've had a 4 day test and the cars have been seen, timed and a lot of people have made a lot of comments. What's wrong with trying to form an impression and posting it on t'internet? This is not the London Gazzette, it's not a legal document, I have not secured this speculative comment against my house.
In case anyone has not noticed, we haven't had a race yet in 2012. Apparently that means that means we are not allowed to guess at the pace of the cars or the early performance of the drivers without being called a moron.
Maybe after the next test, I will change my view. So sue me. I don't give a monkey's arriss to be honest and I care not about people coming back at the season end and telling me I said this that or the other.
I don't come here so that I can try and make people think I'm a genius or an expert or cool or message board savvy. I come here for a bit of a laugh and a bit of banter. As it happens, I am a genius, extremely rich and the ultimate lover but that's everyone elses problem, not mine.
I do live near The Back Door man himself, or at least he used to have a place around here. Haven't seen him about for a year or 15 so maybe not now but you would often see him walking about the country lanes.
The bit about genius and extreme riches was made up.

I'm currently working on a single phase model which can be installed horizontally in Aussie pubs so that you can all feel how Webber does at Red Bull while you watch the race.

You should also do a mobile model (cordless) so people could hire them at the track & get the ‘Mark Webber’ feeling in realtime. You would have to run a ‘Vettel battery pack’ though as Mark Webber battery packs as notorious for giving grief.
You could market it with a slogan of something like, say:
Feel like Mark for a day, whilst experiencing the power of Seb!

You'll need at least two on the wall. For accuracy, Marks will have to be small and run slowly so you come second.
marks not that slow- 1 screen and a smaller screen to be equivalent of 1.5 parge screens in surface area, as there is no such thing as 1.5 screens now is there.
